OUR CANTERBURY SPORTING LETTER.
(From Our Special Sporting Correspondbni •' St. George.") Christchurch, February 28.
There is again nothing to send you in the way of racing news, all the sporting world having spent this week at Dunedin. Gipsy King's victory in the Cup was very generally anticipated, and while the books have done badly over the meeting the public are small winners. The Christchurch visitors speak highly of the racing, but one and all condemn Mr Driver's starting. You will hardly expect any comments from me on this subject, but I may say that several local owners have expressed their determination to absent themselves from the Dunedin meeting so long as the present starter holds the flag. This may be only talk — probabJy it is, but I give it you for what it is worth.
E. Cutts left for the North this evening with Cruchfield and Golden Crest, both having engagements at the Wanganui meeting. The gelding is looking particularly well, and should appropriate a stake during his circuit. The Ellesmere meeting has been postponed to April 10, to avoid clashing with the Peninsula fixture.
The Ashburton Tradesmen's Racing Club will hold a meetiDg some time about the Queen's Birthday.
R. Richardson will, I understand, shortly leave Christchurch and relinquish his many appointments as handicapper and starter. His place will be difficult to fill.
The cricket on Saturday was not of much moment. The United beat the Addington Fifteen, and Lancaster Park inflicted a oneinnings' defeat on the Midland Fifteen. Jones made 101 for Lancaster Park's Second Fifteen against the same club's Third Fifteen, and good scores were made in their respective matches by R. Harman (59), W. Studholme (50), and Andorson (41).
