NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL PRIZE FIRING MEETING.

(By Oub Special Reporteb.) Fibst Day;

Oamaeuj February 27.

The annual prize firing meeting of the New Zealand Kiflo Association commenced here today under most propitious circumstances. The range is situated on the racecourse, and Captain Sommerville has evidently made a very happy selection, for the ground is almost all that could be desired. The direction of the range is nearly due east and west, and a capital background is afforded by the hills at the back of the racecourse. There is a field of wheat stubble intervening between the targets and the marksmen, and this is likely to prove a little troublesome to the sight on a sunny day, but otherwise the range is almost perfect. The targets, 25 in number, are situated close up to the hill, and a trench about 7ft deep extends along the whole length of the line. The range has been connected by telegraph, and a portable telephone? is used between the range and the butts. The camp is situated inside the grandstand enclosure, and everything there seems very comfortable. Fully one-half of the men are under canvas. The catering and the canteen are in the haDds of Mr Bee, and he has done all that could be desired in providing for the comfort of the men. A double lean-to 70ft in length has been erected to serve the purpose of a mess room, so that there is plenty of accommodation, This year a change welcomed by all competitors has been made in ammunition, Kynoch's having to give way to Bley's. and from what I have heard the change has given very general satisfaction. Some cf the cartridges miss fire, but very few of the shots have fallen short. The arrangements for scoring, and indeed the arrangements generally, seem to be excellent, and the staff deserve every credit for the manner in which they have carried out their duties. The morning broke cloudy, but at 10.30, when the first match was commenced, the light was very good, the only disadvantage being a steady breeze which swept across the ground. The competitors had finished firing at the first range soon after noon, and at that stage an adjournment was made for luncheon. The match was finished during the afternoon, several good scores being made. The two leading scores are three points higher than last year's winning score, which was made by Corporal Hutchinson, of North Duuedin Rifles, and in all seven competitors have beaten that score this year. This augurs well for good shooting in the other matches. The Wellington match, it should be mentioned, does not count in the aggregate for the championships. The second match was commenced about 3.30, and the wind having moderated somewhat several good scores were made. Several Otago men are up in the leading ranks at the first range, and Sergeant Chalmer, of B Battery, is one of the six competitors who have made 45. All competitors will have to fire in uniform tomorrow. 1 1 was understood that this order would not be enforced, and there is some little growling now about the unfairness of the regulation. The Taranaki men arrived this afternoon, so that there are now between 260 and 270 competitors. There were over 300 at Christchurch last year. Had the Martini-Henry or Reming-ton-Lee rifles been obtained for the meeting, there would probably have been nearly half as many more competitors. A meeting of the council was held this morning, when it was decided in consequence of tho paucity of entries to strike £25 off the rifle prize money and £50 off the carbine matches, including the aggregates. Lieutenant Griffiths, of Blenheim, was appointed a member of the Executive Council in place of Captain Rodgers, who is absent; and Captain Cooper, of Auckland, was appointed in place of Colonel Mahon, who is in charge of the camp. Captain Collins has charge of the statistics, and Captain Sommerville is the general manager for the meeting. Mr Lemon acts as local secretary, and Mr Lane, of Christchurch, is assistant secretary. The people of Oamaru have responded most liberally with subscriptions for the North Otago match, £120 having been subscribed. It may be mentioned that when the sights were tested this morning a great many marksmen had to make an alteration to regulation size. The weather promises well, and there is every prospect of tho meeting being concluded on Saturday evening. The details are as follow :— Wellington Match. — Open to all comers, not counting for either belt. Ranges, 200 yds and 500 yds. Seven shots at each distance. February 28. The weather was again fine to-day, and some capital scores were made. Firing at the second range of the Hawke'sßay match was commenced punctually at 8. The weather was very warm, but tempered somewhat by a mild breeze from the right front. Soon afterwards the wind chopped round, and blew right up the range. The match was finished about 20 minutes past 10, Gunner Lumsdon, of Auckland, being top scorer with a fine total of 82. Private Johnston, of the Olutha Rifles, was winner of this match last year with a score of 80. As showing the improvement in shooting this year, it may be mentioned that scores of 76 have been counted out, while last year marksmen with 72 were prize winners. There are 11 Otago men in the prize-list. Last year there were only four. Gunner Lumsden's score at 200 yds consisted of five bull's-eyes and five iuners. At 500 yds he made three bull's-eyes, three inners,two magpies, and two outers. The following are prize winners in Hawke's Bay Match.— 2ooyds and 500 yd s; 10 shots at eiich distance. Open to all comers. Counting for both belts. One prize of £10, one of £7, one of £6, one of £5, two of £4, three of £3, three of £2, and nine of £1 each. 200 500 yds. yds. Tl. There ate 13 Otago men in the prize list. Just before 6 o'clock the second range of the Nelson match (500 yds), for carbines only, was fired. There were some good scores, the light being good, with hardly any wind. Gunner Kuchen, of Wellington, heads the list with 43 to his credit. The 300 yds range will be taken at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. The day has been a regular scorcher, and when the wind fell and the sun shone out on the stubble across the range, it was rather trying to most of the men. The Northerners, however, seem to like it, and judging from their scores it just suits them. The council meet on Friday to decide where nest meeting will be held. It will probably be at Blenheim ox Napier. Auckland Match, for rifle or carbine belts.— 2oo, 300, and 500 yards. Seven shots at each distance. Open to all*. February 29. The weather continued beautifully fine and good progress was made with the shooting today. A fitiffish breeze blew across the range diagonally from the north-cast nearly all the day, and the weather was very warm for a while about noon, many of the men having umbrellas up ; still the weather was almost all that could be desired for shooting, and continued fine till after the last shot had beeu fired in the evening. Then it commenced to rain, and now, 8 p.m., the sky is overcast and there.is a slight drizzle. Captains Sommerville and Collins are sanguine of getting the meeting over on Saturday afternoon if the weather keeps up, and they ar9 certainly making every effort to finish the meeting within the week. Shooting was commenced at 8 o'clock this morning with the Marlborough Match, and the winner turned up in Private Hutchinson, of the North Dunedin Rifles, who seems to be shooting in his old form. He made a capital score at j 500 yds, but fell off a little at 600 yds. His total (67) is four above the score made by Captain Acheson, of Riverton, who won the first prize last year. Sergeant Fairs, of Auckland, was second with 62, and fifties were counted out. There are this time seven Otago men in the prize list, two more than last year. The Marlborough Match having been finished, the second range in the Nelson Match, for carbines only, was fired, with the result that Gunner Lumsden, of Auckland, secured the £8 prize with a total score of 75. Last year Sergeant Parslow, of Auckland, was first in this match with 74, and M'Corkindale, of Oamaru, the carbine champion, second with 71. There were five Ofcago men in the prize list last year; this year there are only three. Thore seems likely to be a close run for the rifle belt. Counting the matches finished up to tho present, it will be seen that three Otago men head the list. Colour-sergeant Sonntag and Privata Hutchinsou top the list with 215 each, while Private Johnston, of the .Clutha ;Rifies, is only three points behind. Captain White, of Auckland, last year's champion, has 203 to his credib. For the carbine belt it will be seen that Gunner Lumsden has the highest aggregate— viz., 229. M'Corkindale, last year's champion, is a long way behind. The North Otago Match was started this afternoon, but only two ranges were fired. The principal scores will be found below. A range of the West Coast Match, for the carbine belt only, was fired during the afternoon. There were several protests to-day, but none of a very important nature. Most had regard to uniforms worn. At a meeting of the council the question of movable back sights was discussed, some men having used a piece of paper in connection with their sights. It was resolved that movable sights be disallowed. Mahlbohough Match, for the rifle belt only.— 500 yds and 600 yds. Ten shots at each distance. Open only to rilie volunteer members of the association. Medium Snidor rifles. First prize, £8 ; second, £6 ; third, £4 ; two of £3 ; three of £2 ; and eight prizes of £1 each. 500 600 yds. yds. TI.
