CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above council was held at Balclutha on Friday. There were present : Mr W. Hay (chairman), aud Crs Hunter, Christie, Bradfield, M'Lachlan, Robertson, Scott, Dallas, and Mackenzie.

COBBBSFONDENCE.

The Paymaster-general notified a remittance of £1500, being advances on grants to South Molyneux aud Richardson ridings. The Clerk of the Wallace County Council wrote asking co-operation in a resolution passed by that council requesting the Government to introduce a clause in the Counties Act giving power to county councils to authorise the erection of gates on county road lines — Received. Mr A. C. Begg, as agent for J. Douglas, renewed an application to have the rates paid on Mr Douglas' property of 8200 acres at Pomahaka spent on the road leading from Clinton to the property. It was pointed out that £54 13s 0d was received annually as rates from the property.—On the motion of Cr Scott it was agreed that £20 be spent on the road referred to, the same to be charged against the Pomahaka riding, A letter written by John Tolmie, Upper O»wake,to the Land Board, and forwarded by the clerk, complained that the council had closed a dotted line through sections 28, 21, and 23, block IV, Catlins district. The settlers wished the road kept open, as it was the only practicable road to get to the Crown lands from the north, and it also shortened the distance to Balclutha by two miles.— The member for the district and the clerk to reply that ample notice had been given of the meeting for hearing objections. The Clerk to the Clinton Town Board called attention to the urgent necessity for repairing the main streets of the township.— The sum of £10 was voted for the purpose. t William Brookes, Waiwera, wrote declining to comply with a request of the council to remove an earth bank he had erected on hia property, and which prevented -the water flowing in its natural channel, and requested payment of a bill for £1 4s, beiug the cost of erecting the bank. — The focmsr decision of the council to be given effect to, and legal proceedings to be adopted to compel removal of the bank. Cr Robertson wrote reporting on the complaint of Hugh Hansen and M'Krae against Samuel Winslade for obstructing a road line within the township of Kelso. He reported that the complaint was frivolous; that M'Krae is not a resident and has no interest there, while Hanseu's name was not on the Clutha roll, aud he (Cr Robertson) could not discover any interest he had in the district. — No action to be taken.

MISCELLANEOUS. The Finance Committee recommended payment of the monthly paysheet, amounting to £118 15s 7d ; J. Low, £15 12s lid; Daily Times, £2 12a ; G. W. Hutchins, £1 8s : H. S. Reunert (expenses), £8 lls 6d ; Mills, Dick, and Co., £9 4s 6d ; Clutha Leader, £7 10s Gd. The Engineer reported on the position of the several contracts within the county. In reply to a question he explained that the bridge across the Owake stream at Dutton's might require some new planks, but he considered it safe for the season's traffic.

The following motions were passed :— •" That the engineer be instructed to report at next meeting what amount of maintenance metal will be required for the main road between Port Molyneux and Waitepeka railway station." — " That a culvert be put in road leading to Monaghan's property, Te Houka, with half chain of metal on top to protect the tiles." — " That the remainder of loan money due on Owake road leading to Mr Wilson's property be spent in culverts as the engineer may direct."—' 1 That the engineer be instructed to take legal proceedings agaiDst all persons who after once having received notice from the surfacemen to keep their cattle off the roads throughout the county persist in allowing them- to stray on to the road lines and damage the roads or ditches." " That the council meet bi-monthly, i.e., on the last Friday in March, Mpy, July, and September." The following tenders were accepted -.—Road, Waipahi to Arthurton : James Black, £39 1 3s 4d. Waiwera platform bauk: John* Christie, £15 10s. Ashley Downs, new road : John Christie, formation, £14 10s ; metalling, £3 ss. Old Lake road : John Christie, £32. Taylor's road, Kuriwao: T. E. Steele, accepted up to £20. Main South road, Wairuna : W. M'Googan and Co , accepted up to £80. Main road, Te Houka : Sim Bros., £32 10s. The meeting then adjourned, the proceedings having only occupied a little over an hour.
