FYFE AND CUMING'S NEW PREMISES.

On the site in George street recently occupied by a co-operative grocery store, a Chinese tea shop, and a fancy goods shop, all of which were almost completely destroyed by fire some months ago, Messrs Fyfe and Cuming have had erected new premises for the purpose of carrying on their drapery business. The wall which remained at the back of the building after the fire has been taken down and a new ono built in its place. The old floor has also been removed and a new one put in, the ground underneath having been previously excavated so as to admit of improved ventilation under the floor. In order to avoid the necessity of having columns to support the roof, the building has been covered with a roof in one span, constructed on the frame principle. The building has a depth of 48ft Bin, and a frontage to George street of 47ft 6in. The front is divided into three bays, and in each of these there are two sheets of plate glass measuring 10ft x sft. There are two front entrances to the building, the width of each doorway on the street being 7ft. There also recesses about 6ft 9in deep in each doorway, and on each side of these there are 10ft x 6ft plate-glass windows. The back portion of the building inside is lighted with two glazed lanterns in the roof, each measuring 10ft x 7ft, and provision has been' made for lighting at night by means of albo-carbon gas fittings. The front of the premises is painted black, and varnished, aud its appearance is considerably enhanced by the erection of a verandah. The premises are very commodious, well lighted, and exceedingly well adapted for the display of drapery goods. The plans for the building were prepared by Mr James Hislop.
