OI'AGO V. INVKRCAKGILL. Played in the recent match— lnvercargill v. Otago Chess Clubs— between Mr A. Tame, of lnvercargill, and Mr W. B. Eyre, of Dunedin. King's Bishop's Gambit. White. Black. NOTES. (a) Stnunton calls this the " classic defence," and says it lpads to by far the most instructive and entertaining games of all the systems of defence of which the opening is susceptible. (b) B to Xt; 2 is considered the best here. (o) A capital rejoinder. id) Tho position is now very critical and interesting. (c) Injudicious. We believe B to KKt 5 would have strengthened Block's game considerably. (/) Obviously better than taking either of the B. Black's exchange of Queens has givon quite a unique aspect to the game as there are still two pieces en prise, (a) Cleverly played and evidently unforeseen by Black when he proffered the exchanges. (h) Under ordiuary circumstances, we have no doubt, Mr Tame would have resigned sooner, but being captain we auppoce he did not like to strike his flag for fear of disheartening his men.

Mr David K.
