Mr George Sumpter, of Oamaru, has made the following reply to the circular of the Dunedin and Suburban Schools Conference, In his circular to committees he says that he is " in favour of taking steps to amend the present syllabus, which has prejudical effects both on teachers and pupils " : — I duly received your favour of the 6fch instant, and in reply have pleasure in stating that tho views of the committee, as shadowed forth in your letter, mainly accord ■with my own. If elected lam prepared lo support, ns far as practicable, the "platform " adopted by thecommifefcef. lam in favour of the abolition of cumulative voting, and a stricter definition of the qualification of voters. I am in favour of the proposed alteration of the mode of election to the board— viz , forming four districts, returning two memberß each. I have for some time past made efforts in the direction of better regulations as to t.he issue of school books, also of amending the syllabus ; but am not sure that the best method of effecting a change would be by a conference of the inspectors only. Tarn in favour of a periodical change of inspectors' districts. I am also in favour of an application being made to Parliament to define more clearly the respective functions of boards and committees.
