CASUALTIES.

A young man named Murray Eccles Johnston, in the employ of Mr F. H. Daniels, lost his life at Lake Wakatipu on Thursday while attempting to cross the neck of water at the head of the lake on a horse. The correspondent of the Southland Times states that apparently the horse rolled over on getting beyond its depth. A number of deceased's friends were on the shore, and a boat pulled off to rescue him, but failed to reach him before he sank. Johnston was a good swimmer, but was burdened with a heavy overcoat. The body has not yet been recovered.

From the evidence given at the inquest on the young man David Logue, who was drowued while crossing the Titiroa, it appears that he had been in Fortrose with O'Brien, and they were crossing the river in a flat-bottomed punt on their way back. The punt commenced to take in water, and Logue becoming alarmed caught at O'Brien, causing the boat t& upset. Logue caught O'Erien in the water, and while struggling he let go his hold, and was not seen afterwards. A verdict of "Accidental death " was returned.

A married woman named Annie Watson, who resided with her husband at Christchurcb, died at her residence on February 8, at 6 a.m., and was buried on the following daj in Addington Cemetery. In consequence of representations made to the police that deceased and her husband did not live happily together, and that quarrels between them were known to have taken place shortly before the woman's death, a coroner's warrant for exhumation of the body was signed by Mr Beetham, and it was exhumed accordingly, and subsequently reinterred. At the inquest the coroner stated that there was a deal of evidence as to cruelty on the part of deceased's husband, but that the testimony of the doctors who attended her did not corroborate it. No evidence was taken, and the inquiry was adjourned for a week to allow of full evidence being obtained.

A child, 15 months old, daughter of Hector Alexander, painter, of South Dunedin, was found drowned on Monday morning. It seenu that she had been seen playing in the yard at the back of the house at about 12 o'clock with another little girl 3| years of age. Shortly afterwards Mrs Alexander missed the child, and as she could not find her, she informed some of the neighbours, who assisted in the search. About half-past 12 Mrs Alexander's son found the body of the child lying face downwards in a ditch in the yard. The body was immediately taken to the house, and measures were taken to try and restore animation, but without having any effect.

On Sunday morning a very painful accident occurred near Waimate. Mr P. J. Murphy, of Lower Waihao, while driving to chapel with his wife, had tho misfortune to be thrown out of the buggy through the horse kicking and bolting while coming down a hill near Waimate. Mrs Murphy was picked up unconscious, and one leg was badly broken. Mr Murphy was severely bruised, but no bones were broken. Mr M'Gowan, of Waitaki North, who was following, had Mr and Mrs Murphy conveyed in his buggy to the Waimate Hotel, when Dr Stacpoole -was at once summoned. Upon eiamination it was found that Mrs Murphy's injuries were of a very serious nature, and outside medical aid was telegraphed for. At noonoo Monday Mrs Murphy showed no signs of returning consciousness.

Lucy Denize, 22, daughter of an Onehungs settler, was drowned at Lake Takapun»(N.l.)oo Saturday. She suffered from melanoholia, and got out of the house where she was staying unobserved in the early morning, and it is supposed threw herself into the lake. The body was found in 16it of water.

An accident that terminated fatally occurred to Mr J. A. Reardon, of Hastings, Hawke,s Bay, on Sunday Deceased went home about 11 on Saturday night, and lay down on his bed without undressing. At 2 a.m. he complained of the heat, went into the passage, opened the window by some means overbalanced himself and fell 3ft on to a verandah, and rolled down the sloping roof and on to the ground, a distance of 14fu Deceased was l'fst weight. His wife hearing a noise ran out, and found that he had Bma3bed his leg below the knee. Medical assistance wa» quickly obtained, and it was found necesswy to amputate the injured limb.
