THE OAMARU AND PHŒNIX CLUBS' DISPUTE.
The following letter, with the attached footnote appeared in Tuesday's Daily Times : — Sib, — There seems to be a good deal of discussion here at the present time relative to a matter now before tho Bowling Association between the Oamaru and Phcenix Bowling Clubs. The question under discussion is whether the association has come to its decision apon an ex parte statement. I for one feel perfectly satisfied that no association would at any time decide a poinfc referred for its decision without first hearing or having the statement of both sides.
The point in dispute appears to be as follows: — About two years ago a member of the Oamaru Bowling Olub gave offence by using certain language towards several of its members which was considered offensive to the club. The member was called upon to apologise, but this he refused to do on the ground that he was justified in using the language by the conduct of several of the members towards himself. A meeting was thereupon called, and a resolution passed that the member be expelled from the club. The expelled member appears to have joined the Pbcenix Club on its formation about 18 months back. About a month ago the Phcenix Club challenged the Oamaru Club to play- a match, consisting of 3 rinks, but the Oamaru Club decided to postpone the consideration of the match until the expelled member apologised to theirclub. The Phoenix Club considering that they had no right to interfere in a matter which occurred some two years back, and before their club was in existence, suggested that the matter be referred to the association to arbitrate upon.
I may state that many persons here naturally think at this lapse of time the Oamaru Olub ought to have allowed the matter to drop, particularly after the admission by some of its members that the words made use of did not amount to much; but be this as it may, the decision of the association will be looked forward to here with considerable interest.
There is one question I should like to ask :— Can the association take notice of a matter between two clubs which occurred long prior to the existence of one club, and prior to both clubs joining the association ? — I am, &c,
Alpha.
Oamaru, February 3. [So far as we can learn, the association is simply called upon to say whether the Oamaru Club should play against the Phoenix while the person who offended is a member of the latter club. The wisest course to adopt in such a friendly game as bowls is, no doubt, to let bygones be bygones. — Ed. O.D.T.]
