TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of this council was held at Mosgiel on Friday. There were present : - Mensrs Snow (in the chair), Grant, Graham, Thom6on, Andrew, Smith, and Bunting. IMPORTS. The Inspector reported having examined the mountain track over tho Lammerlaw range at Boyd Bros.' run. It would require a large expenditure to make ifc passable for dray traffic. The coat of repairing Princes street, Burnside, would bo about £29 7s. and of repairing the road to Green Island quarry £35 9s. The cost of repairing the culvert on the North Taieri road near Campbell's would be about £12. He recommended that 17 chains of the Brighton road near Mee's creek bo metalled— cost about £37, and that 500 yds of gravel be procured for the road between Woodside and Outrara— coat £45.— The council were of opinion that they had no authority to spend money on Boyd's track. The inspector was instructed to see Or Thomson with regard to Princes street, Burnaide. It was resolved to call tenders for the other works recommended to be carried out. It was decided to employ a surfaceman for one mouth, to relieve the present surfaoeman in the East Taieri riding. The Bngineor reported having examined the Henley-Berwick road. He recommended that 30Oyds of rough gravel be spread on the worst parts between the railway station and the lake — cost 2s per cubic yard. Part of the river embankment between the Henley bridge and Berwick road, over which a considerable amount of county coutract carting had passed, had been worn down and would require raising with about 14yds of clay material to the chain for about 24 chains. Regarding the road deviation through the Native reserve, he reported that he could not see any advautage to bo gain«d either in improving the road or in reduction of cost by tho proposed deviation, and therefore he could not recommend that it be carried out. Regarding Shand's applicaticn for the council's signature to plans of part of the Maungatua district, he had ascertained fcnat there was nothing the council could object to, but at the same time he thought it was unnecessary that the council should incur any respoiwibilifij by the chairman formally consentingorsigningtheplan. He had attended with members of the council and examined a part of the Henley drainage district with a view to deciding whether the watercourse from Hastie'B hub to Henwood's cub should be opened up. He suggested that the channel be cleaned and cleared of all obstructions .19 far as the west corner of Janoen's property, as the course in question was, without doubt, a natural one, and should be kept in such a state that it could take its fair proponion of flood wnter.— The report was adopted, and it was resolved to carry out the suggestions of the engineer, Or Graham expressing dissent from the adoption of the last clause. CORRESPONDKXCB. The Under-secretary for Public Works intimated that the balance of £bib, remaining unexpended out of grant No. 27 under the Hoads and Bridges Construction Act, would be placed to the credit of the county.— Heceived. 3ho Under-aeuretary wrote stating that as the funds at the disposal of the Mines department were limited.no payments would be made after the end of January on the subsidy of £200 promised for the road from Mullocky Gully to Silver Peak.— Received. The following resolution passed at a meeting of the Road Board of Outram was forwarded by the clerk : " That with the view of getting a fair valuation of the Taieri county, the Outram Koad Board recommend the county council to appoint two valuators of practical experience to value the county all through, and the On tram Koad Board hereby bind themselves bo bear a fair Bhare for valuing the Outram riding. ' — It was resolved to get the solicitor's opinion regarding the time for making a special order regarding the valuation of the county, H. Harraway and four others a^ked the council to form and metal the Quarry road at Bumside. — Hef erred to the inspector and Or Thomson to report. Donald Cameron wrote asking that some repairs might be effected on f.ho East Taieri raid neur its junction with the NV>rth Taieri road.— Kef erred to the inspector and Or Thomson to report. David Angus wrote asking the council to appoint him as cattle ranger. — The inspector was appointed ranger. A number of Burnside residents asked that some repairs might be carried out on Prossor street, Burnside East.— Referred to the inspector and Or Thorneon to report, Forty-iwo ratepayers petitioned the council to j defer the removal of tho old bridge on tho Kiccarton road till thoy are in a position to erect a new bridge in its place.— A counter petition signed by three ratepayers was also received.— lt was resolved to call I tenders for the erection of a new bridge. The Clerk reported having examined applicants for the position of assistant in the office. He recommended that Robert G. Inglia be appointed.— Agreed to. THE MCCAKTON niUIX. Or Smith's motion that Mes.-rs Otiarters be notified to remove obstructions from the drain on their property at liiecarton road was not seconded, and accordlng'y it lapsed. TENDERS. James Moir's tender for tho supply of dog collars at£l 18s tfcl per 100 was accepted.
