THE WORLD'S CEREAL CROPS, 1881.
the International Corn Market opened at | Vienna on the 29th July, with 1 the reports of the results of tne crop in fiurojie 1 , America} Egypt, and # India-. THd&e reports having been compiled" with great care for the past 15 yearß, have now in commerce obtained undoubted authority, and greatly influence European transactions in cereals and other productions. The yield of cereals more immediately concerns colonists, and this, according to the detailed statement in the report and on the basis that 100 represents ah average crop, is i—
The wh,eat crop 1 of the United States is Estimated at 42&,00(>,0db bushels AgaiWb 43T,000,000 last yefef, 'the cob crop (maize) at 1,600,000,000 bushels against 1,665,000,000 bushels lost year. The wheat crop of India is set down at 6,390,000 tons against 7,739,000 tons in 1886. . Amongac the otuer countries Pruasia, Saxony, Bavaria, Mecklenburg, Switzerland, Holland} France, Great Britain, Cr&MA Kuflsia, Waliachia, *?* S&vk have wheat crops above t£e average; Baden, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and South Russia have average crops ; and Wurtemburg, Italy, Northern Russia, Moldavia, and Egypt crops under average. Summarising the total returns compared, with the standard 100 as representing an average crop, for wheat— lo are considerably above) 19 from slightly under tb slightly over; and three very much below-. tMer the heading rye— l 3 are average and ovet, bine are about 10 per cent, betow,, and six considerably under. For barley—lß ate from slightly below to average and over, and nine are mostly very materially under. The rfeturbs fop dats exhibit a very appreciable deficiency in the Euto^ean crop*, only one— the Italian crop — being abundant, four other returns ,are slightly over average, 10 are 10 per cent; under, while 13 are very much below the standard. Although there will be a small surplus in Hungary, the deficit in Austria is so serious that oats cannot be exported from the kingdom. x Of transactions at the opening of the Vienna annual corn market it is reported that but for the decline in the production of the United States and India, prices would probably have fallen heavily. Even under existing conditions pieces remained low and transactions were uuusually restricted. It was expected that operations will be of smaller total amount than in former years. Later intelligence from Vienna (September 5) states that up to date the business of the International Corn Market did not come up even to the very moderate expectations formed of it : " The more sellers showed themselves inclined to give way, the more rsservad buyers became> notwithstanding the low prices and first-rate quality."
