WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of this county council was held in the county offices, Waikouaifci, on Friday last. There were present : The chairman (Mr J. Green), and Crs J. O. Buckland, W. J. Bolt, J. Crickmore, J. Porteous, and J. D. Ritchie. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs J. Maxwell and A. Dempster personally appeared to urge upon the council the desirability of gravelling about eight chains on Puddy's road, in continuation of contract 283. — The council agreed to grant the application, conditionally that Mr Rendall, the contractor, consented to do the work at contract price. Mr Mullany applied to have the matter re the cleaning out' the ditch along the boundaryof his property reconsidered, on the representation that the inspector's report had misled the council. — After looking into the matter, the council agreed to allow Mr Mullany to clean out the ditch, on the understanding that he did not obstruct the natural drainage. Mr Wilson applied for permission to establish a pound in the Blueskin district, and_ offered to erect it himself on receiving the appointment of poundkeeper.— The consideration of the matter was postponed. PETITIONS. Twenty-two settlers in the Merton riding petitioned the council to take steps to prevent the straying of cattle on the district road.— The counoil decided to forward a copy of the application to the inspector of police, requesting him to instruct his officers to take active measures to redress the grievance. FINANCK. Accounts for the month amounting to £196 9s 5d were passed for payment. CONTRACTS. Tenders were opened for the following works, and tho lowest was in each instance accepted :— • Contract 292— Forming portion of Round Hill road, Merton riding : A. Catherwood, £15 145 ; A. Donald, £16 ; C. Bond, £16 16s. Contract 2D3— Forming a portion of Scratchback _ track, Hawksbury riding: Ward and Williamson, formation, £3 10s per chain, pitching 3s per yard, rock Is 6d per yard, ditches 3s 6d per chain. Contract 294— Supplying 150 yds metal on Main road, Blueskin riding : John Bell, 2s 9d per yard; Gough and Lindsay, 2s 9Jd; James Martin, 2s lOd. Contract 295-Pitching a portion of Lower Harbour road, Blueskin riding: Charles King, old wall 3s 9d per yard, new 5s 9d ; M. Rochford, old wall ss, new 8s 6d ; M. C. Stevenson, old wall 4s 6d, new 6s 6d ; F. J. Harkness, 5s per yard (informal). Contract 296 — Supply of metal and gravel on Warrington road : The committee recommended that this contract should be divided into four portions, and the following tenders accepted:— (l) Chas. Bond, 4s lid per yard ; (2) A. Catherwood, 2s 6d per yard; (3) Charles Bond, 2s 3d; (4) G. and H. Bland, 2s 6d.— The report was adopted. REPORTS. The Inspector reported that six or seven days' surfacing would repair the road referred to in Messrs Gilmore and Dodds' application, but to improve the gradient would cost: more than the traffic warranted.— The council agreed to repair the road, but could not at present improve the grades. The road across section 55, block VIII, North Harbour and Blueskin district, which Mr Woods applied to be allowed to form, the council -declined to grant, in accordance with the inspector's recommendation. The monthly leport submitted by the inspector, which stated that all the roads throughout the county had been improved very much, was received. In connection with the road through Galbraith's land, which was the subject of a letter at last meeting, and upon which the inspector submitted a report, the chairman was requested to wait upon the Perpetual Trustees and Agency Company with tracing and Mr Galbraith's receipt, which showed that a road deviation through section 10, block 111, had been purchased by the Hawksbury Road Board, and as the council were anxious to have the deviation legally completed, resolved^ to take the necessary steps to close old road line, have the new one surveyed and certified, and the agreement with Messrs M'Dougall and Wilson implemented. The consideration of an application to have certain repairs executed on the Pigeon Flat road, which the inspector reported on, was postponed by the council. The inspector having reported on the application of Messrs Mitchell, Wallace, and others to have the road at Mitchell's crossing and the footbridge repaired, the council agreed to call for tenders for the footbridge and to defer the consideration of the other matters for the present. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter from Mr C. Jensen, Heyward's Point road, was received, and consideration postponed, asking to be allowed to alter track across his land at Purakanui, as he understood the council intend to open it. A letter from Mr George Mackenzie, Dunediu, was received intimating that he had forwarded to the Survey Officer plans of new road through sections 59 to 64, block VII, and road alterations from sections 11 and 28 to 36, block VI, North Harbour and Blueskin district. An enclosure from the Secretary to the Benevolent Institution, Dunedin, was received giving
a list of persons receiving outdoor relief within* the county. ' The Colonial Secretary, Wellington, acknowledged the receipt of a letter from the chairman, in reference to the allocation of cost of maintenance of the Main North road as Between the two counties, which was received, and the chairman instructed to interview the Colonial Secretary upon the first opportunity. The Crown Lands Office, Dunedin, intimated that the board did not object to the--council forming the road line applied for by Messrs Lloyd and Apes to cancel sections 54 and 55, block V, Hawksbury district, in the district? road. — The letter was received, and referred, to; the inspector for a report. The consideration of a letter from Mr Jons* Maxwell, Hawksbury, drawing attention to thai want of another culvert on Clajrk's road, was deferred to enable Mr Maxwell to consult with MrDiack re the cleaning out of the creek on the. opposite side of the road. Circulars from the Hospital and United Distriots Charitable Board re the election of trustees were received, and the chairman was appointed to represent the council. The clerk Waihemo County Council wrote with respect to the election of a delegate to represent the two councils and the place of meeting in connection with the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, which was received. The clerk to the Port Chalmers Borough Council intimated that the council had decided to call for tenders for the work applied for by Messrs Salter and others at Mansford Town.— Received. The council then adjourned.
