NOTES. (a) Herr Schallopp usually contrives to avoid beaten tracks. The next move, though perhaps inferior to 3...P to Q 4, may be played without disadvantage. (6) Cook says White ought to equalise the game here by 7 B tks Kt. R tks B, 8 Xt to X B 3, Q to B 3, 9 Xt to B 3, P to B 3, 10 P to Q 4, P to Q 4. (c) A more cautious player would probably push his Pawns to Q 3 and Q B 3, stopping the advance of the adverse Q Xt, and also threatening P to Q 4. Black doubtless saw that he could obtain a powerful counter-attack by allowing the Xt to come forward at move 10. (d) Premature. His course appears to be 11 Bto X 2. to which Black might answer 11. ..Castles, leaving the B P to be taken. (c) He should capture the rook, notwithstanding that he would lose both Xt and B for it— c. g. y 12 Kfc takes R, Hto Q 3, 13 QtoKt 5, Q tks Q, 15 Xt tks Q, P takes B, and the Xt cannot escape. White retreats the Xt to Xt 5 to prevent 12...8 to Q 3, and tno lightly abandons the B for a supposed advantage in position. (/) The latter part of the game is beautifully played by Herr Schallopp. White must give up the exchange, for If 22 Q to B 4 the Q is lost, and if 22 Q X sq, Black wins easily by 22.. .Q tks P. (ff) White may of qourse take the B, but he has no chance after 27 P takes B, Q II to B 5, 28 X to Xt 2, Q to Q 4, — Nottinghamshire Guardian.
