LATEST BETTING AND TRAINING NOTES.

Melbourne, October 21. Late last night Affluence was backed for the Melbourne Cup to win £5000 at 100 to 2.

October 23.

On Saturday Spade Guinea did a mile in splnndid style. Pasha aud Mirella accomplished oik! mile and a-half, goiug well, the former finishiug strongly. Silver Prince, in cousequeuce of his last gallop, has been heavily bicked at 100 to 20 ( taken and offered). Tranter, for the Derby, is at 100 to 15 (taken). Even money is laid on Abercorn.

October 25. The following betting took place after the appearance of the Cup acceptances-: — 3 to 1 agst Algerian 3 _ 1 Silver Prince 14 _ i Tr:dent 16-1 Dm, lop. DERBY. 4 to 1 agst Tranter o — 1 The Australian Peer 8— 1 — Niagara The others unchanged.

Late last night Niagara again came into the betting for the Derby, aud all the money in the market; was taken, about him at 100 to 12, and backers were willing to go on at that price.

There is very little betting doing, and quotations remain the same as last night, with the exception of Oakleigh, who won a trial this morning, and is being heavily backed by the stable; 100 to 12 wanted and 100 to 14 offered. Even money is laid on Abercorn for the Derby.

October 26.

Late last night Abercorn was backed to win the V.X C. Derby for all the money in the market at evens, and a shade of odds is now laid on his winning. Tranter is easier, and 5 to lis now on offer about him. A considerable amount of mon^y has been invested on Australian Peer at sto 1. Pakeha was backed to win £2000 at 100 to 5, after which he advanced to 100 to 6.

For the Cup, Oakleigh has been backed for all the money in the market at 100 to 12. Algerian and Silver Prince are both 100 to 20 (taken). Trident has been backed for £4000 at 100 to 7, and is now quoted at 100 8. £1000 was taken about Abercf>rn's chance at 100 to 8. Dunlop has been supported to win £2000 at 100 to 5. Meteor was backed to win £8000 'at 100 to 6, and his best price is now 100 to 8. £2000 to £100 has been taken about Recall.

The case against Mr Oxenham and his trainer in connection with the alleged pulling of Toronto at the Moouee Valley races has been dismissed by tha stewards for want of evideuce.

There was not much doing in the betting market to-day. The latest quotations are : —

Derby.— -Abercorn fielders take 11 to 10. Tranter haß been backed for £2000 at 100 to 25.

For the Cup, £1000 has been invested on Trident at 100 to 9, and £8000 at 100 to 8 to 100 to 9. Algerian is at sto 1 (taken). Silver Prince has been taken for £1000 at 100 to 20, and Abercorn for £2000 at 100 to 4,

| Reuter telegraphs that the latest betting on the Melbourne Cup is 8 to 1 against Oakleigh for the Cup, and 11 to 1 against Meteor, the others being unchanged.
