AN EXPLANATION.
The cause of the rumour relative to Sir Julius Vogel's Auckland trip has been explained. It appears that a few weeks ago Mr James Mills was chatting in the corridor of the House with the ex-Treasurer, when the latter remarked that he did not know how to amuse himself during the fortnight's adjournment, and that he thought he would take a trip to Auckland. Mr Mills, with characteristic generosity, offered to place the state cabin of any of the large steamers at the disposal of Sir Julius Vogel if that gentleman wished to visit Auckland. Sir' Julius thanked Mr Mills, and said it was probable he might take advantage of the kind offer when tho Te Anau returned from Melbourne. Although Sir Julius had forgotten all about the conversation, Mr Mills had not ; and when the Te Anau started from Port Chalmers the state cabin was set aside for the use of Sir Julius. This explains all the fuss re the Auckland trip.
