The Story of a Nugget.

The story of the finding of an 86oz nugget of gold in a vineyard is told iv the following interesting letter from Mr Bate, mining surveyor of the Stawell district: — "At about half-past 6 o'clock a.m. on the 14th a man named Charles Hurnall, while engaged in weeding vines in his garden, near Garden Gully, about a mile and a-half south from Great Western township, made a false stroke with his hoe, and unfortunately ruined one of his vines. This misfortune was, however, compensated by the fact that the same stroke of tho hoe unearthed a fine nugget of gold, which, on its arrival at the London Chartered Bank at Stawell, was found to weigh 8f!oz 16ilwt21gr. The gold will be forwarded to Melbourne on or about Ist November ensuing, and I think the Miuing department ihould procure a plaster cast of it, as from its form (which may be classed as botryoidal) perhaps some information may be obtained as to the mode of occurrence of such nuggets. The land in which the treasure was found had been previously repeatedly turned over."
