NOTES BY JACK.
The bowling season may now be said to have commenced in New Zealand. The Oamaru and Roslyn Clubs being the first to play their opening matches in Otago. The weather in Dunedin on Saturday was very windy, and it could not be said to be a very favourable day for bowling. However, the members of the Roslyn Club rolled up well, and thoroughly enjoyed their game. There were a great number of visitors from other clubs watching the play. Dunedin, although announcing at the beginning of the week its intention to play its opening match on Saturday, wisely deferred it for a week. The Caledonian green is not yet in a proper state to play on, as owing to the several improvements being made at present to the ground, the caretaker has not been able to devote the time and attention necessary to get it in proper order. It is hoped that the line weather experienced this week, together with the energy being displayed in fixing matters up, will allow of its being used for the coming Saturday, but the club has not yet decided whether it will start play then, or on the Saturday following. A number of members of the Caledonian Bowling Club met on the green on Saturday afternoon, and as the little green was cut and rolled in preparation for lawn tennis, a game taken part in by two full rinks was played. The large green will be out and rolled during the ensuing week, and if the waither is favourable duo notification will be given to the members of the opening of the reason. The lawn tennis courts will also be ready next Saturday, and promise to be well patronised. The Phoonix Club, at Oamaru, are considering the advisability of having a tennis court in connection with the club. The club was to play its opening match on Thursday. The president will give a pair of silver-mounted bowls to be competed for during the season. The opening match of the Milton Club is fixed for the 28th inst.
