HAVELOCK.
October 10.— The Havelock commonage is still a bone of contention with us. The old trustees having taken an apparently immovable stand, aa I wrote you before, a public meeting was held and new trustees nominated. A letter was forwarded to the old trustees requesting ! them to resign, with a view to the better administration of the trust. The letter was treated with contempt, one of the gentlemen averring that it was not dictated in a sufficiently respectful manner to induce him to resign. What will induce him to resign, as well as the others, is an enigma not easily solved. If they would even give an account of their stewardship I matters would not be so bad; as it is nothing is being made out of the commonage, no funds are available, the land is unfenced, and overrun with gorse, and it really appears that there is only one remedy for the evil, as pointed out by the Taapeka Times— namely, to petition the Governor and have the present trustees removed. — [Received too late for last issue. — Ed.]
