THE PRODUCE MARKET.
The fourth series of wool sales opened yesterday, the available quantities being 287,953 bales, made up as follows:— New Zealand, 76,378; New South Wales, 50,910; Queensland, 16,712; Victoria, 44,777 ; South Australia, 8021 ; Western Australia, 386; Tasmania, 5255; and Cape •of Good Hope, 86,514.. The 'first day's sales amounted to 8278 bales, of which about 3000were New Zealand and 2000 each New South Wales and Cape of Good Hope wool. There was : * good attendance of buyers, 1 principally from the Home markets, and competition 1 was fairly brisk. Prices, however, exhibited little change ■torn the closing 'rates of last' series. It is
authoritatively stated that there is likely to be a considerable fallingoff in the supplies in the immediate future from that district in conseI sfcyuunco of mortality amongst the lambsyowing to an adverse season. The frozen meat market remans unchanged. The Mataura, from Oamaru, with 4808 sheep and 2453 lambs, has sold 4360, sheep at 3fd to 4d, and 1600 lambs at 4£d to sd. The Invercargill, from Napier, with 7959 sheep and 3877, lambs, has sold 7300 sheep at 3|d to 4d, and all the lambs at 4Jd to sd. The Arawa, from Lyttelton, with 25,109 sheep and 9817 lambs, has sold- 24,900 sheep at 3d to 4£d, and all the lambs at 3d to s|d., The Tongariro, from Wellington, with 9762 sheep, 5269 lambs, and .734 pieces of beef, has cleared the sheep at 3§d to 4£d, the lambs at 3|d to s|d, and the beef at 3|d to sd. The Dunedin, from Oamaruy with ' 916*2 sheep, classed as "irregular, has cleared at 3£d to 3sd for sound. The lonic, from Lyttelton, with 30,471 sheep, 3252 lambs,, and 109 pieces of beef, also " irregular," has sold 22,000 sheep at 3|d to 4|d, all the lambs at 4|d to s£d, and all the beef at 4d to sd..\The Aorungi, from Wellington, with 12,086 sheep and 3983 lambs, has sold 11,400 sheep at3|d to 4£d, and 3600 lambs at 4|d to s|d. The Lady Jocelyn, from Napier, with 10,349 sheep, has sold 2200 at 3fd to 4d. The Coptic, from Wellington, with, 29,381 sheep, 812 lambs, and 577 pieces beef, has sold 14,700 sheep at 3|d to 4|d, 600 lambs at 4sd to 5Jd, and 170 pieces of beef at 4|d to sd. The Rimutaba, from Lyttelton, with 19,180 sheep and 825 lambs, has sold 6200 sheep at 3£d to 4£d, and 600 lambs at 4|d to s|d. The Tainui, from Wellington, and the Ruapehu, from Lyttelton, have not yet broken bulk. Australian and New Zealand wheat has suffered a slight reduction. The former is now selling at 33s and 33s 6d per 496]b ; New Zealand long-berried— fine 32s to 335, medium 31s 6d to 325, inferior no quotation ; short-berried — fine 31s to 325, medium 30s to 3ls, inferior no quotation.
