PORTOBELLO.
August 23. — Mr Barton has been giving a series of lectures in the various schools in this vicinity in aid of Dr Barnardo's homes for destitute children in London. He has already lectured at Broad Bay, Portobello, and Hooper's Inlet, and iueach place was listened to by a numerous and appreciative audience. The admission is free, Mr BurLon trusting to the charity of the audience being shown by their contributiotis in th*> form of a collection. Nor has he had reason to regret adoptiug this method of raising money, as at the three places mentioned he hits collected JBI 7s 6d. - Mr Barton intends visiting 'lhe Kaik on Friday and the Portobello nwd church on Tuesday, the 30th, and North-Kast llatbour at some future time shortly. He has ceriuinly t!ie best wishes of the community in his self -mipose.i mission.
Obituary.— The Portobello Cricket Club met on Saturday night last, and decided to go the way of all flesh and cease to exist. The funds on hand were divided between the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society and Dr Barnardo's homes, while the plant was~ divided between the Portobello and Hooper's Inlet schools.
