MATAURA.
August 20.— The fine weather we have had lately has enabled the farmers to get well «n with their ploughing. A great part of the land on the west side of the Mataura river in this neighbourhood is swampy and unsuitable for wheatgrowing purposes. On the Tuturau aide wheat is grown, but not to any great extent, the chief crops being oats and turnips, both of which grow well.
LMPKovfiMENTS.— There is a more animated appearance about this township just now than has been the case for some time, buildings for two fellmongeries and the dairy factory being in courae of construction. The latter is a good-sized building, standing close to the railway line, near the confluence of the Waimumu stream with the Mataura river.
Ouk Coal Resources. — Coal of good quality we have here in plenty and to spare, but the local demand is not great, and unless the proprietors of the pits find other markets, they are not likely to make rapid fortunes. One of them intends to try some of the adjoining townships less favoured than ourselves as regards th's useful mineral, utilising the railway as a means of conveyance.
