THE CANADIAN TENDER.
The tender of the Canadian-Pacific railway for the English mail service on the Pacific is as follows : — Canada has offered to contract for the Queen's service at a speed of^ 15 instead of 11 knots, and build its boats under the Admiralty's supervision, so that they may be readily converted into armed cruisers for a subsidy of £10,000 per annum. In addition to this it also offers to carry the Chinese and Japanese mails for 3500 miles asross the Continent America free of charge also to carry troop and Government stores over the same distance of laud, and over ocean at cost price, thus making the route an Imperial highway. The subsidy is calculated on the price per mile which the British Government pays the P. and O. Company for the carrying of the Indian and China mails, via Suez, and by these estimates. The amount in a subsidy for a fortnightly mail service each way between Vancouver and Hongkong would be £105,000 per annum. The other tender of Money and Co.
asks for the Pacific service alone, to be performed at a speed of 11 knots. This tender has none of the advantages offered by the CanadianPacific.
