FINANCE COMMITTEE'S BEPORT.

The Finance Committee's report recommended that the application of the Tapanui School Committee for increased accommodation be declined, the present building being large enough for the number of pupils attending the school ;< that the application for an addition to the Mornington school be declined, there being room to spare in the new High street school y that the old school building at Waipori be handed over to the school committee; that the attention of committees be drawn to the fact that in a number of districts a portion of the grants for cleaning, repairs, &c, is expended in the purchase of stationery for the use of the pupils attending the schools, and that they be informed that such expenditure is contrary to the board's regulations, and that accounts for such will not be passed at the annual audit. — The report was adopted.

OAMARU MIDDLE SCHOOL. The Oamaru School Committee wrote protesting against the appointment of a schoolmistress, and stating that they would recommend the appointment of no one but a matron. The same committee forwarded a recommendation that the whole staff of the school teachers be dismissed at the end of the present year, bub that all of. them be eligible for reappointment. It was resolved to call the committee's attention to the fact that neither the act nor the board's regulations provided for the appointment of such a person as a matron; and as regarded the second recommendation, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Fkaseb — " That in accordance with the expressed wish of the committee, and with a view of the reorganisation of the school, all the teachers receive three months' notice of the intention of the board to dispense with their services ; but the board will allow the said teachers to occupy their present positions until December 31. This resolution not to affect Mr Piper, who was recently appointed." It was also resolred that the visits of the drawing teacher, Miss Bnrnside, to the school be discontinued.

THE BYLLABUS, On the motion of Mr Fulton it was resolved unanimously- 3 -" That a letter be forwarded to the Education department at Wellington expres sing surprise that no notice has yet been taken of the report forwarded by this board relative to the pressure of the present syllabus, and agaia informing the department that the experience of this board" leads it to believe that the attempt to keep up with thb requirements of the present syllabus has a most prejudicial effect on both tho teachers and children of 'this provincial district, aud that the necessity for reform is urgent, »ud the matter one which cannot be overlooked."
