ATHLETICS.
CAPTAIN COTTON v. SCOTT.
Editor Witness, — Kindly ,' allow me, through the medium of your columns, to accept the repeated challenges of Scott to walk against him for 24 hours in the Garrison Hall, at Dunedin, on Monday and Tuesday, the 15th and ,16th of August. Allow me also to say that when I first met him I had not the slightest intention of e\te'r walking again. Circumstances, however, alter cases. But once for all I distinctly assert that, whether I win or lose, I will not be induced to walk again. The conditions of this match are as follows, viz. : That he gives me 10 miles start, and that the winner takes every farthing that may be taken at the gate. If I win, I shall not appropriate any of the gate money, but shall, after deducting expenses, give it to some institution that I consider deserving ; if I lose, I shall not take anything for expenses. — I am, &c., Frederick Cotton,
Christchurch, July 25.
