July 17The following are the battery returns for, tiro past week:— Globe, 98102 amalgam from 1&0 tons ; F'rogtess,,l2 1 9oz pi amalgam from 90ttms; Big Rive* Exertded.— Tile returns, did not corde to hah'd last night as. expected, the dleaniag" up having bfeen put off till to-daty in consequence of the. pfesen'p'e «it t&e battery, of three well-known Reeftonites, each being anxtoug to 1 learn the result and get back first to Reeftofl to operate on the market before the Manager could get in. In ofder to" checkmate this little move the manager, as well as the resident director (Mr Walker)', decided to defer the clean-ing-up till to-day,- and the trio of enterprising 1 speculators had to return empty-handed. There is no official information as to' the probable return 1 but the general report predicts $oz, and transactions in the shares are said to' have beeft effected last nign't at Ha. Globe. — Tne manager reports as foliows; — " The winze is down 33ft,' of which, lOftoln was sunk during the week. . T,here is' no sign of, the footwall as yet. from the top of the winae to the bottom is only 18in from the perpendicular (allading to the upright position of the lode). I tried some stone to-day. It is very, good stone. I can see a lot of gold in it. It is as good as the stone on Wednesday and Thursday. lam filling the west end. It, will be finished this afternoon. The contractors have not started yet. — J. Greenish, mine manager." July 18.

Big River Extended. — The facts as furnished iv last report relative to the reasons for nob cleaning-up were obtained from- oue of the directors of the company. As a sequel' to this, however, a panic took place to-day in shares, which by 2 p.m. had fallen below any quotable lvalue. 'On "interviewing the same director I ; was informed that nothing would be known as i to tHe result of the crushing till Saturday next,. ! when the boxes would be cleaned, , There was. some dissatisfaction current on this becoming known, and the directors met and decided to* clean-up at once, and; one of their number was> despatched to Big.River at 4 p.m. lot thq purpose. Here ' the' matter rests for the present. Various rumours are current, but I shall wait the announcement of the return before referring to them. The whole thing is a mystery at present, and tbe completion of affairs is anything but satisfactory, i , Reform. — The crushing of 170 tons was concluded oft Saturday and the returns came iv to-day, the yield being 1240z of retorted gold, equal to 14dwt to the ton. The return is considered satisfactory. The Big River scare has completely paralysed! the share market and thrown a damper upon everything. It has been the all-absorbing topic during the afterpoon. July 19. Big River Extended. — The expected messenger from the battery has nofcyet arrived, and there is consequently nothing new as to the result of the crushing. An opinion generally prevails, however, that the field is short of exespectation, predictions varying between 18dwfc and 25&wt per ton. Upon what information these estimates are based I 'cannot say, the directors declaring that the returns are not known. ■ ' • Keep-it-Dark.— The shareholders are nowassembling for the extraordinary meeting whiob is to be held at. 8 o'clock. Reports from the mine are highly favourable, andithe shares have advanced to 51s net. Otherwise there is nothing doing. ■ , -
