AN OUTBREAK OP SMALLPOX.
(Redter's Telegrams.) Sydney, July 2. A case of smallpox has occurred here. The sufferer, a man named Alexander, was one of the crew of the Glaslyn, wrecked in the China Seas. He lately arrived from Hong Kong in the steamship Port Victor, which carried several passengers and brought a clean bill of health. He spent one night in the Sailors' Home here, the inmates of which are now all quarantined. Alexander has been placed aboard the quarantine hulk far away. It is known that six of the Port Victor's passengers went to New Zealand by the Wakatipu on her last voyage from this port. July 3. The steamship Port Victor, which brought the man Alexander, who is suffering from smallpox, has been intercepted and quarantined. Nine persons who have been working at the same establishment as Alexander and the man who escaped from the Sailors' Home have been placed under quarantine. No fresh cases of smallpox have been reported. Melbourne, July 4. . . Every precaution is being taken to prevent the outbreak of smallpox here. The arrivals by the Port Victor are kept under surveillance, and the Board of Health are taking steps to have Hongkong and the intermediate ports proclaimed infected.
