The White Star liner, s.s. Celtic ,came into collision with her sister ship the Britannic on May Id iv a fog 350' milea_east of Sanely Hooki The Britannic was bound oat from New* York, and the Celtic bound in. A terrible blow was given to the Britannic in her port quarter, and a! hole Tnade large enough almost for a man to ' walk through. For a time it was supposed the vessel would speedily go to the bottom. Five boatloads, of women, with a sprinkling of frightened men, were put, on board the . Celtic, and by that time it was ascertained the Britannic would, float. The Celtic's bow was stove in', but .other wise, the vessel w»s not much damaged. Seven steerage passerigers on the Britannic were killed and 20 more were hurt. Four were buried at' sea. A French steamer, bound east, passed at the time, but disregarded the signal for aid. On Friday morn" ing' the s.s. Marengo -was fallen in with, and signalled to keep alongside the partially disabled vessels. Later in the day the British Queen came, in the wake of the three, and in answer to, signals joined the procession, making a marine parade of vessels. The, ships reached Sandy Hook at 1 o'clock on the morning of the 21st, where they were stuck in fog all day, the mails and passengers being taken off •by despatch boats from New York. They arrived at the bar of .New York Harbour at 1 o'clock on the 23rd.
