HAMPI^EX. '• v - Jujtb 25.— Our annual" ploughing match Va§, hpl(| in Mr M . Mortimer's paddock. The^ground was very soft, and the attendance, until late .on, very poor. There was only one competitor in Class; B, ananas a competition could not consequently be 1 held, the plonghman(G. Gould) was transferred to Class 'A', for ploughmen who; have gained first and second honours. - In this class there were six en trips— viz.-, Messrs IT. Caldwell, O. Whyte, W. Bowman, W.,Po)j iSck, T.M'Fadden, and G. Gould. ' Qf these the four first. mentioned hail on different occasions'; taken firstjpriies, so^hathad anyonpof tihem proved victori? bus on this occasion, tbe set of harness/ offered, by the committee (valued at £25) would have become the absolute property of the victor.' 27.' Caldwell won the harness for the second time, ana it conseV quently became his , property, , Caldwell's and Whyte'a lota -were mostly admired by 'the spectators' and as Caldwell was placed first and Whyte second-^ this opinion turned -out pretty' correct. There,! is not 'the, slightest doubt that- ; the had the best block, which helped him considerably to attain the position he did.' The judges were Messrs' J. Gemmell (M&heno), J. Allen (Teaneraki), and C. Beid (Flag Swamp), and their , decisions during, the day were generally agreed with. T^e chairman o^

the committee (Mr W.- Murcott), in presenting the harness to Caldwell, exhorted the boys and younger men present who aspired- to ploughing honour* to. prolt ; by the example of the first prizetaker, whohad been well grounded in his youth how.to . ",hapd the plough." „ • , . Mr Caldwell did remarkably well out of the match, winning, in addition to the champion prize, the fol- . lowing prizes : —First prize in .claßß A (£3), pair names for best break, box tea for best seed bed, clock for be3t team, hat for best groomed horses, pair of winkers for best kept harness in daily use. Altogether it must pay remarkably well to excel at a ploughing match. The other prizetakers were :— ln c\m A, 0. Whyte, 2 (£3) ; &. Gould, 3 (£1) ; T., M' Fadden, 4 (10a) ; straigbteat ploughing, G< Whyte, pair names ; best finish,- pair hames, G; Whyte ; mam with largest family, W. bollock (sheep).
