EAST TAIERI.

June 13.—Ploughing is being pushed on vigori ously, and wheat is being got in as quickly as possible. The land during the past few weeks has , been in very good condition, and a good breadth j has been sown. The early sown wheat shows a fine healthy braird, and early sown oats are also looking well. Potato lifting is general now, , and very fair average crops are being obtained. The turnip crop is proving above the average of . the -past two years. In some cases they are being carted off the land and stored for winter use. Grass, with the advent of frost, is becoming scarce, growth being over, and the stock in the fields are being reduced in number. On , some farms feed is still plentiful, however; but feeding is now pretty general, and dairy stock are, as a rule, housed at nights. ( The Rabbits.—The laying of the phosphorous grain begins in this district on the 17th June. The rabbits have had their season and , made good use of it, for they are fairly plentiful. It is to be hoped the grain will make a successful innings for the farmers. Unless some other means is adopted for coping with the pest, how- ' ever, they will always be troublesome. I think tho Government should collect or tally the skins ,got by each landowner during the season or .year, a course of procedure which would prove !who was rabbiting and who was not. By adopting this course those who act fairly would not be harrassed by the inspector as at present, and ;there would be no fear of injustice, such as one jOwner being compelled to adopt preventive 1 measures while the rest are allowed to go free, as is the case to a great extent now. E/eryone would have to work for himself, butter results would consequently follow, and the rabbits would get less rest than at present.
