Time, 50 minutes. — Adclaia j Observer. Dunedin Chess and Draughts Club. There was a large attendance of members on Satutday night and the chess and draughts boards were iept constantly employed The committee have decided to commence a draughts handicap tournament on an early date, which .will be open to all members on paying an entrance fee of 2s 6d, which goes towards the prize fund, and which will also be supplemented by a donation from the club funds. As these tournaments tend greatly to improve the play of those engaged in them, this is a most suitable time for those desirous of joining the club to do bo, for they will-reap the fu'l benefit of constant and careful practice, with the chance of gaining suitable prizes should they come out of the struggle for supremacy successfully. Several new members joined the club on Saturday night. Messrs David E. Hay and Henry Howes were empowered to make the necessary arrangements for the approaching draughts match against a combined team of the Port Chalmers, Sawyers' Bay, and Peninsula players. The town team will be confined to the members of the club, and as the contest is expected to prove a very keen and exciting one, it is to be hoped that some now members will join the club meanwhile, so that the committee may have an opportunity of selecting the strongest possible team. AS I CANTER.CHEERJLY ON. I am bound for the farm adown the plain, Where the blue gums rise in view,; It is there midst the fields of ripening grain Beats the heart that's ever true; < Oh ! now is the time to proclaim my need; For lost is the love that can come no speed, So a kindly word to my trusty Bteed, ,: As I canter cheerily on. Commend me the horse of a steady pace, " And a buoyancy of stride, ' That' my thoughts may dwell on my loved one's ■ > Jace Whilst pondering on the ride ; ■ May no passing event delude my brain, ' Apart from that love which Is not in vain, Save a tight'ning hold of the bridle rein, As I canter cheerily. , > Lo I there in the scrub, not so far ahead,' Stands a form which waves me on ; But yet now in the silv'ry tussock sped, Like a shadow come' and gone, ' , ■ In a welcome shape will it reappear: , 'Tis herself, in truth, for the farm in near, With the hoofs still resounding sharp and clear,' As I canter cheerily on. I am homeward bound with a lightsome heart, For success attends my way, ,■ j < • And though years may run I shall never part With the present of to-day. She has pledged her troth to be mine ere long, So I ring out a stave of gladsome song. Oh! my trusty steed be as ever strong, Ab I canter cheerily on. — Esmond. June 6. '
