OUR AUCKLAND SPORTING LETTER.

(From Oub Special Sporting CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, June 14. News comes from Wanganui that Messrs Baker and Co. have had the misfortune to lose their stallion Fevo, whom it will be remembered, they purchased in Auckland last season. Feve was imported to Auckland about six years ago by Mr R. H. D. Ferguson, Waikato. Though a grandly-bred animal, Feve proved a great disappointment at the stud, and though given many chances, Patrician^ Victoria, and Victory were

,the, only ones of ; any. note , he-; ever sired.,Feve., was taken ; over .to Sydney „. but the only one of his Australian progeny heard of 'winning 1 a race was The Beau, who, •managed io scramble home' first in an unimportant event at a country meeting. > . Silvio, winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase, was shipped to Taranaki with a view to fulfilling, his engagement in the Hawke's Bay ' Steeplechase^ to be run on Jubilee Day. His • Auckland 1 "victory" puts him in' for a 71b > penalty in the Napier race,' but as he carried 41b \ ;over when jhe> won the Great Northern, he will really only have to put .up,. some 31b more to. "bring., his weight to, list 91b.,, The little, 'son "of Isaak' Walton "was in 'capital .health' when' he left; though I hear, great accounts of 'Miinn's'lpair, Owhabko and Marigawhere. jl ;fancy^ he will beat .the. Napier pair. Eean was unable, to , accompany the, horse and Sam Powell will administer the final touches to his toilet. ', '.' ( ' Trenton's full brother, 1 Cuirassier, has after all gone into J. Kean's stable to train. Eean ;has now seven. yearlings under his charge, and as they include some rare bred ones I expect to seehimmake a pretty clean sweep of the two-year-old races next season. \ ■■■ The owners of Silvio have, I hear, purchased ibis, half-brother by Eudymion, and he will be .brought from Taranaki at an early date. The' totalisator returns at the recent Auckland, meet ing fell short by some £300 of the amount passed through at the same meeting last year. . . ' . . , The racehorse Kalo (by Yattendon— Gipay Girl),' was 'sold last week at; auction, Mr J. Stephens taking the black rogue at £12. Mr Enko last week sold his steeplechaser Wild Boy, to F.Duder for ," a fiver." /Peter Osbeck, having gone wrong, has been blistered and turned out. . ,i , , Pusyka is the name selected by >Mr Enko for his' yearling colt by Musket from Lady Ravensworth.' .- - . - - , A sculling match for £50 was rowed at Mangawhere yesterday .between White, of Mercury Bay aud Brown, of Wairoa. The former won easily. White was favourite at 2 to 1. , " , ! FOOTBALL. •The weather on, Saturday was disagreeable, but the public turned out in large' numbers. Graf ton v. Gordon : Great interest was taken in this match, the former being favourites. From the kick off- Graf ton forced the game, but • Gordon fought very stubbornly. ■ By a capital kick Johnstone potted a goal from the field for Graf ton, and a little later on Reed followed suit -for Gordon. At half-time neither side had added further to the score. When the game was resumed Graf ton again forced the play, and their opponents were on several occasions seriously pressed. At length Brown got the ball, and from a splendid kick scored another goal for Graf ton, which was further added to a little later on by Gardiner securing a try. No goal resulted ; and the game eventually ended.by.Grafton winning by 10 points to 4 points.r-Ponßonby v. Waitemata : Ponsonby won easily, after a one-sided 'game, by 37 points to. nil. Davy (2), Whiteside (2); Arneil (4), A. Brand, Stephenson, . and Wooller secured tries, and^Oatway, J. Brand, Davy, and Stephenson kicked goals. — Auckland v. North Shore: North Shore had a very uninteresting game with Auckland, winning easily by 17 points.
