DIPTON.
June 6. — Threshing is now finibhed in this district, but the yield is not up to expectations. The average of oats does not reach 25 bushels per acre. Some farmers have obtained Is 5d for them ; but that is exceptional, a larger number getting only Is 3d, But little wheat was grown, but the poor return for oats this year is inducing many to try wheat, and I expect to see a considerable acreage of that cereal in the spring. Ploughing is being pushed on. The weather is live and frosty and favourable to farmwork.
Political — We have another loc^l aspirant for Parliamentary honours in the person of Mr R. D. M'Lachlan, who will oppose Mr Cowan for Hokonui.
A Want. — Like most large centres, I notice that your city is filled with bootmakers, while we poor settlers have to go wet-shod through snow and rain for want of a stitch. Since the death of Mr M'lntyre the business has been carried on by his apprentice, who is unable to overtake the work. If some good man could put up with a country life, a really good business might be got together here, and one which would amply repay him for the loss of such attractions as theatres and tramcars.
