KELSO.

June 7.— A farewell soiree was given at Dunnett's Hall on the 24th ult., to Mr Fairmaid, a divinity student, who has laboured amongst us for the last six months, and now leaves for Dunedin to attend the theological classes. Mr Fairmaid, through his friendly intercourse with the residents and his able discourses, has gained for himself a goodly number of friends, both old and young, who I have ho doubt will watch with interest for his success as a student and a preacher. The Rev. W. Scorgie occupied the chair, and in addition to an address on " Christian manliness," delivered by the guest of the evening, the Rev. Messrs Neave, Scorgie, and Finlayson, and Mr A. Ross addressed the meeting. The tables were provided by the young ladies of the surrounding districts, and were presided over as follows: — No 1. Miss Clouston and Miss Byres. No. 2. Mrs Paton • and Mrs M'Kay. No. 3. Mrs John Dunnett and Miss Jamison. No. 4. Miss Harvey and Miss Sutherland. The choir rendered good service during the evening, singing a collection of sacred music under the conductorship of Mr Jack. Jubilee Ball. — The Caledonian Society have decided to hold a ball in honour of the Queen's jubilee. Agricultural. — The weather as yet has been very mild. The grass is holding out well, and stock appear to be in good condition. Ploughing is the order of the day. Notwithstanding the bad times and the low price of oats, farmers continue to go in strong for land on the cropping system. We have every appearance of having more grain in this district during the coming season than we have ever had before.
