PETITIONS.
A petition was presented to the House to-day from Robert Bauchop and Robert Ritchie, of Port Chalmers, sawmillers, who asked for compensation for damage to their mill, estimated at £300, being caused by the action of the Public Works department. Lieutenant-colonel M'Donneil petitions the House of Representatives asking that the pension attached to New Zealand crosses should be paid to him as from 1878, like other recipients.
The Public Petitions Committee, reporting on the petition of Charles Mussen, of Caversham, who received injuries through the carelessness of a fellow employe in the Railway department, says that the petitioner appears to be a worthy object for a special compassionate allowance. They recommend the petition to the favourable consideration of the Government.
In the case of Andrew Sutherland and Matthew Dods,»warders at Seacliff, the same committee report that the petitioners having already received payment of one month's pay and their cost in full of their claims against the colony, they cannot recommend their prayer ihattheybe reinstated or awarded compensation. .^ ■ Reporting on further petitions against the employment of barmaids, the committee again say that as no evident *" itever has been adduced in support of the allegations contained in the petitions, they have no recommendation to make. ° . •
