CORRESPONDENCE.
A letter was received from Mr Ussher (Public Works department) asking permission to lay down a tramway to the ballast pit in sections 5 and 6, block XIV, Taieri district,— The council would have no objection if the Government would apcept nil responsibility. A letter was read from the Crown Lands Office, Dunedin, asking the council to state what roads money is proposed to be spent onin Strath-Taieri. — Received.
Mr M'Kerrow, Surveyor-general, wrote asking to be supplied with a report of the works undertaken by the authority of tbe Minister of Lands to open Crown lands for sale on 30th June next.— Referred to the engineer. Mr P. Black, secretary of the Charitable Aid Board, wrote forwarding a list of persons struck off ani added to the list of February l, 1887. — The clerk was instructed to write to the effect that Mr Clarkson's name be inserted on the Itet for relief.
From the same was received a statement of amount? due by the council to the Charitable Aid Board for the year ending March Jsl, lßßß.— Received. - The Hospital Board forwarded a statement of amounts due by the council to that body ud ,to March 31, 1888,— Beceived. A post card was received from Mr Fulton acknowledging receipt of letter re West Taieri bridge.—Head.
Messrs T. M. and J. Walsh forwarded a statement of thbir claim for compensation for the destruction of their crop in the Henley drainage district.— Claimants to be offered £5 as compensation.
The Town Clerk of Boslyn wrote stating that the borough has m funds at present to devote to repairing road leading to Whare Flat. — Read. A letter was received from Messrs D. Keid and Co. (on behalf of the Berkley estate) with reference to a floodgate in the embankment adjoining Waihola Lake. — Read. ' ■
, Messrs Duncan and Macgregor wrote asking for a certificate from the chairman for closing roads in the Waihola district.— Bead. '
A letter was received from Mr Adams, chief surveyor, asking to be supplied with a report of operations performed and approximate area of Crown, lands opened up. —Bead. A petition from the ratepayers in the Kaikora? district was read praying that the road district may be abolished and merged in the county. A similar petition from the ratepayers in the Suburban road district was read.— On the motion of Or Thomsojf it was resolved that special meetings be called for the 24th June and 25th August 1887. A communication from the clerk of the late Taieri Boad Board was read, which stated that until he hears from the chairman of the committee of the late board he can do nothing in the matter of handing over the books and papers of the board to the council.— The chairman of the county to write and ask the clerk to hand over the documents and papers to the county clerk. Alexander Strachan wrote asking to be allowed to take the ditch scourings from the road south of Mosgiel. — Left in the hands of the inspector. The clerk of the Roslyn borough wrote askiag the chairman to meet the Mayor of Roslyn to confer with him re repairing the road up Kaikorai Valley. — Referred to the chairman.
TENDERS.
Joseph Bryant's tender for laying gravel on the road near Brighton was accepted at 2s lid per yard. Tenders were received for spreading metal on the Centre road, but the matter was deferred.
EXPENDITURE.
A schedule of expenditure, amounting to £582 15b 4d, was laid on the table.
BANK ACCOUKT. The council's debit balance at the bank is £2998.
