A project is on foot to create an accident fund in connection with the West Lancashire Rugby Union. The fund is to be' made applicable to cases of injury arising out of matches played by the union, but although it will' thus be limited in scope, it is nevertheless a step in< the .right direction. Having provided the necessary trophies, the strain upon the finances will not be so great as formerly, and there is therefore every probability that the scheme will assume a tangible shape at the annual meeting in September next.' Perhaps some of these days our Otago union may consider *a similar scheme. ! A .well-known member of the Scottish Football Association says there are very few good clubs in Scotland free from professionalism in some shape or other. ■ ■ , , I The .final tie in the Cumberland Rugby Challenge Cupwas played at Maryport between < Aspatria and Millom. This was the first time that Millom had' taken part in a, final tie, although Aspatria have reached the final stage on three or four previous occasions. This year the competition 'has excited comparatively little interest, owing to some of the best clubs in the county, including Carlisle, who won the cup last year, holding aloof; and there has been an entire absence of that excitenu lit which has been manifested in' previous years. On this occasion Millom proved successful by a try and two touch downs to four touch downs. In a recent match at Home a player from a free kick, on account of off-side tackling, sent the ball over the bar, but of course no goal could be scored. The cup ties excited extraordinary interest in -Yorkshire, and it' is computed that nearly 400,000 spectators were attracted to witness the various ties in the competition. Wakefield Trinity have had very good fortune in this Challenge Cup, and have taken part in no less than six out of 10 final ties. Owing to bad railway accommodation, the attendance at then* last match was not up to the average of the finals, tut some 10,000 people were present when the proceedings commenced.'
