Mr John Everest sold at Palmerston on Saturday by auction, under instructions from the^ mortgagee, the farm at present occupied by Mr J. Watt, and containing some 104 acres, situate at Shag Valley. The price was £13 7s fid per acre, the purchaser being Mr Andrew Wright, Goodwood.
The' New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received the following telegram from their London office, dated 27th inst. :—" Tallow : We have to advise an advance of 8d per cwt since las* report. The demand is rather better, being partly speculative and partly consumptive. South American is worth 23s 9d per cwt." The amount of customs revenue received during the past week on goods cleared for con*
jumption amounted* to £4387 14s 9d. The beer duty amounted to £178 19s 3d, and the gold duty to £715 5s 3d.
INTERCOLONIAL MARKET REPORTS. Sitotcy, May 21.— Wheat: Business quiet, but palues remain firm in sympathy with the other colonies . Good nulling lines, 3s lid to 4s per bushel ; c hick feed from 2s 3d. Oats : Arrivals less than in previous weeks. Bright heavy feed is worth 2s 3d to 23 4d; seed, 2s 6d; discoloured lines, Is 10dto2s. Barley : Cape seed, 3s 3d per bushel. Maize : Prime river lines, 3s 2d to 3s 3d; Tumut, 3s 6d. Bran, 9§d to lOd. Pollard, 9d per bushel. Chaff: Large arrivals from Victoria and Adelaide quitted at £4 to £5 53 per ton; exceptional lines, £5 10s. Potatoes: QircularHeadssteadyafc £3per ( ton ; New Zealand, £2 10s to £2 15s. Butter : Market firmer. Illawarra in jeg.ls to Is Id ; factory made, Is Id to Is 4d ; intercolonial, nominal. Melbourne, May 24.— A good inquiry continues lor wheat, and stocks in town are well held ; quotations 4s Oid to 4s Id. The Argus states :— " A few inquiries have been experienced for export to New South Wales, and it is likely some large parcels will be wanted there for millers' requirements. But as prices here are considerably higher than those ruling in New Zealand, where the wheat this year is of good quality, it is probable that the bulk of the lupplies will be drawn from that quarter. Oats: Improved demand experienced. Milling and seed lots in request at up to 3s 2d per bushel ; stout oats jcarce at 2s 10|d. Barley : Prime malting up to 5s jd." The Leader of the 21st inst. notes the sale privately of 850 bags New Zealand prime malting »iss 9d. Other qualities not quite so firm. Quotations are : From 3s to 3s 3d for Cape ;upto4s 8d for medium malting. Sydney maize, 4s 3d per bushel ; Gippsland do, to 4s Bd. riran, lid. Pollard, lOd. Butter: Prime fresh, lOd to Is 2dperlb; superior potted, to lOd ; inferior, 4d to 6d. Cheese: Prime large, 6d to 7jd ; medium, 4d to s§d. Hams : Town cured, 9d; country cured, 7d to B§d. Bacon : Town cured, 9d; country cured, 7d to B|d.
Adelaide, May 21, — Market firm and holders of wheat asking higher rates— viz., up to 4s 3d per bushel. The position of holders is a strong one, and there is every prospect of rates being maintained. Shipments are boing made on a liberal scale, some 6000 tons having bten booked for the United Kingdom and the Cape. Sales reported during the week ire 4000 bags at 4s Id, Port Adelaide ; 20,000 bushels en trucks, Port Adelaide, at 4s 2d, and a further parcel of 20,000 bushels on trucks at port at 4s 2d. Oats are plentiful at 2s 4d to 2s 8d per bmhel ; arrived from New Zealand, 4000 bags. Barley. Malting, 4s 3d to 4s 9d : Cape, 3s 3d to 3s 6d. Butter: Prime fresh, Is 2d to Is4d per lb ; medium, 61 to Bd. Cheese: For loaf, 9Jd to lOd; large size, 7d to Bd. Hams, lOd. Bacon, 7£d to 8d for guaranteed sides, factory cured.
