VOLUNTEERING.
The rifle match between the First and Second Battalions of the Otago Rifle Volunteers wss fired on the Pelichet Bay range on Tuesday. The earlier part of the day was fairly suitable fo* shooting, although the light was bad, bat » strong cold wind in the afternoon made gooo scoring difficult. Countrymen were expected to reduce this to a vanishing point at the long range. This; however, they were unable to do, only making, up 8 points at the range and so ending the match 30 points to the bad. The ammunition used was Kynock's.- The highest range scores in the match were : At 200 yds, Captain Milne (Caversham Rifle Volunteers), 31 ; at 300 yds, Lieutenant M'Keich (Tuapeka Rifles), 26 ; and at 500 yds, Lieutenant Grant (West Taieri' Rifles), 29 ; the possible in each case being 35.
