CAMBRIANS.

May 23. — A very successful concert in aid of the f undß of our athenssum took place on Friday evening, Mr Burnett, of Hawkdun station, presiding. The hall was well filled, there being about 150 persons present. The first part of the programme commenced with a violin and piano overture by Mr E. Morgan and Miss Haig ; and the various songs, recitations, &c. which followed were successfully rendered and favourably received. A pleasing feature of the entertainment was the christening of the athenjeum. This was done by Mrs Hoogklimmer, a visitor from Melbourne, who named it the Victoria Athenaeum, in honour of the Queen. Mr Burnett briefly reterred to the life and reign of the Queen ; and in order to incite the young people of the district to endeavour to act a faithful part in their journey through life, told a story showing how Princess Victoria on discovering that she was heir to the throne on the death of William IV, instead of being overjoyed at the bright prospect before her, simply said to her mother, the.Duchess of Kent, " I will be good." He pointed out that her Majesty will not be remembered simply by the progress made in art, science, &c, but by her acting up to the motto she chose when she ascended the throne of Britain— viz., "Good before great." The concert was brought to a close by the audience singing the National Anthem ; and the usual dance followed.

The Telephone. — Telephonic communication has been established between Cambrians and St. Bathans. This should prove a great boon to the district.

Scholastic. — A well-attended meeting of householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday, 25th April, for the election of a school committee. The following were elected:— Messrs S. M'Cullough, John Teague, James Elliott, John Jones, Thomas Hughes, Caleb Dungey, and W. Williams. A meeting of the new committee was held on the 29th, when Mr S. M'Cullough was elected chairman, and Mr W. Williams secretary. The school attendance is keeping up well, the average for the last two weeks being 53 and 51 respectively. — [Occasional correspondent.]
