WAKATIPU MINING NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Arrow, May 17.
Mr L, O. Beal, jun., mining engineer, of Dunedin, is at present busy amongst the snows of Macetown making surveys of several claims. Whether they will lead to something being hatched during the coming winter that will take tangible form next spring remainß to be seen. It is time that something were done ic. this longneglected locality, which, has turned out far more gold than all the other reefing centres in this district put together. The Tipperary, at Macetown, has turned out far more than any other claim in this district, although it has not been worked half so long as some of them, and has had in many respects not half the facilities of others in its development. As a company in which never a call was made and many handsome dividends were paid, the Tipperary is unique in mining history. The Homeward Bound, Gladstone, Maryborough, All Nations, Ladye Fayre,* Keep-it-Dark, and several other claims at Macetown have all given proof that numerous reefs carrying considerable quantities of gold exist there which it only takes capital and system to develop. In quartz mining all the efforts are directed now towards getting as much quart* crushed as possible before the frost sets in, and cakes will probably come in pretty plentifully shortly. Most mines continue to yield good prospects, which in most cases are of sufficiently permanent appearance to presage a prosperous season for next year. It is reported that during his recent visit to Skippers the Marquis of Huntley determined to invest £1000 himself in the Mount Aurum Company, and promised to induce at least 10 other noblemen in the old country to chip in an equal trifle to prospect what will be when granted the largest gold reefing claim (200 acres) in the southern hemisphere. A gentle-
man of large and varied experience, and well qualified by technical education as a mining eugineer, has been selected to supervise the works, which will supersede anything hitherto attempted .in this district, either for completeness or magnitude.
In alluvial mining things look very well. Many parties in many parts of the district are doing fairly well, while many new ventures of considerable magnitude are taken in hand one after another.
The Arrow River Tunnel Company have now all their works in full going order, and their hydraulic jet elevator gives every satisfaction. The bottom has been reached, and several really splendid prospects obtained, so that the parly have the double satisfaction of having testified the applicability of the jet elevator to river workings, while at the same time they have proved the value of their claim beyond all doubt.
