LAND & WATER.
A match has been arranged between John Maekley,, of Port Chalmers, and Anthony Palamountain, of Deborah Bay, to pull a distance of three miles and a-half for £25 a side. The start will be from twn boats down the harbour, with a straight run home, finishing between the Bowen and George street piers. Major Goring will act .as starter, Captain J.Watson as judge, Mr L.O. Beal as referee, and Mr W. J. Waters as stakeholder. As both men are well known and very efficient, a very pretty contest is expected. The race comes off on Saturday afternoon next, at highwater. The annual four-oared boat race between representatives of the Otago and luvercargill Rowing Clubs took place on the morning of the 16th. There was splendid weather, and a high tide. The Ounedin crew bad the choice of course and boa.ts, and chose a course of two miles. The crews were :—: — iNvEucAßfliix R.C.— Jojce (stroke), Woithington Pavitt, and G-. Clare. Otago K.C.— Branigan (stroke). Mills, Butter.worth.and Matheson. The average weight of the local crew was lOst lib, and .that of Dunedin 12st. The boats got o,i? to a geod start, Invercargill taking a, slight lead. 4t a quarter of a mile they increased this, to' a. flie^, lejngth, but at half a mile the Dunedin men got .ou even This continued for 200 yard/, .fcovtfa ,erewß pulling their best ; but from that poipfc the .Inye^cHjrgijl men . gradually drew away, and won by si? lengthy. ' In delightful lacrosse weather the S?unedin | Club met ai Tahuna Park on Saturday and had j a most enjoyable game. Sides were chosen by ' M'Kerrow and Orr, aad after a pretty evenly congested game, victory declared for the former by two £oals (both taken in the first spell) to Ope, flf?%esfo&ff JF his side, threw one goal
and Fraaer put through the other, and for Orr's Stephenson secured the only goal. M'Kefrow played a pretty and a very hard game, and was ably backed up by Trythall. Of the new members, Grant shows good form, and should prove a valuable acquisition. The other players who distinguished themselves were Fraser, Holmes, Brent, Wilson, Monkmau, and Ashcroft. The defeat of the Wellington cricket team caused no surprise in Auckland, but it was never expected that the match would be the hollow affair that it turned out to be. It was not at all difficult to see where the weakness of the visiting team lay. Their bowling was far from good, and a long way behind the average looked for in an interprovincial match. Herein lay the secret of their severe defeat. Their batting was much better than their bowling, and they might be considered a fairly good batting team. In fielding the visitors were quite equal, if not superior to our men, and they were decidedly better than the Aucklauders in the outfield. They played an honest, manly, and straightforward game and took their beating in very good part, and in this respect proved themselves in marked contrast to,, the footballers of the empire city. Three rinks from the Dunedin Bowling Club played a Mosgiel team on Saturday, and won after an enjoyable game. The Dunedin bowlers scored 96 to their opponents' 62. At a meeting of the Otago Angling Association held on Tuesday evening the secretary (Mr G. M. The offer of Mr Anderson, of Stirling, to present a gold medal for competition, was accepted with thaoks. It was decided to recommend the procuring of additional assistance for Messrs Deans and Burt during the spawning season, and to handicap in future all previous winners of Anglers' Association's gold medals by having 15 per cent, deducted from their total weight.
