LAND & WATER.

The Gazette • notifies that Californian quail may be taken or killed within the Lake district, consisting of the county of Lake, from the Ist June to the 31st July, both inclusive ; and further, that native game, excepting tuis, may bo taken or killed within the said district from Ist April to 31st July. ' . . The six-day_s, 12 hours per day, go-as-you-please pedestrian race in London, in February, was won by George Littlewood, who covered 403 miles. Corbett, was second, with 380 miles Connor third, with 360, and Spicer fourth, with 340 miles. - The 12,000 'up, spot-allowed match at the Westminster Aquarium, between J. White and G. Collins, produced one or two remarkable results, and also gave the big breaks and performances which rumour said were certain to eventuate. White won by 3546 points, gaining steadily each day. His best breaks were 964 (including two runs" on the spat), 773, 783,569, 565,487,398,319." These were too many big guns for Collins,- who was in poor form all through the week, his best runs only amounting to 357, 292, 274, ' 269, &c. On the last day White did a really grand performance, making a run of 105 consecutive screw-backs in his. 783 break. This beats the previous record, which was 95 by North at the Billiard Hall, against Roberts, in November 1885, when the former wa3 limited to 100 consecutive spots. It must ac remembered that White is the only man, besides Mitchell, Peall, Taylor and North, who is credited with 1000' off the balls, he having put' on 1015 against Peall at Gatti's in November 1885. In this respect he is in front of both Cook and Roberts, neither of whom. has ever reached four figures in a break. The Dunedin Bine Club's concluding competition of the season for the gold medal took place at the Mornii'gfcon range on Saturday. Mr J. Heatley was declared the winner, having made the highest aggregate score in any four out of the six competitions. Mr J. Hardy was second and ' Mr J. S. Capstick third. Very great dissatisfaction has been ex.pressed at- the ammunition of Kynock's make purchased by the club from the Government, and it is determined that this brand shall be boycotted in future.
