(a) A novelty which was introduced at the suggestion of Mr Blackburne, and as it turned out, with 6ucce33, in a private match played a week or two ago between himself In consultation with Captain Mackenzie against Zukertort and Gunsberg. (6) 11 Xt tks B would seem to give Black something like aa equal game; at all events it would have spoiled the pretty and decisive manoeuvre which Mr B'.aokburne adopted, and which he no doubt had in view when he played ft Xt to Q 5. (c) Mr Stelling and sonn talented spectators were uowdispoted to think that Mr Blttckburne had got hlmaelf into a scrape ; but as will be seen this turned out to bequlto an erroneous view of the situation.
