The Australian Eleven was commenced to-day on the Melbourne Cricket ground. • The weather was splendid and the attendance good. Excellent wickets had been prepared, 1 , and the ground was in first-rate order. Having won the toss, the home team went first to the wickets, where they remained »11 day, and when stumps were drawn the score stood at 223 for eight wiokets. Ho never gave a chance till taken by a most difficult catch. Blackham displayed the best form, and towards the end of the afternoon scored with great freedom. Giffen, who has been for some time unwell, was unable to play. Melbournb, January 3. The cricket match Shaw and Lillywhite's team v. The Australian Eleven was continued to-day. The home team, who yesterday" losfc eight wickets for 223, continued their innings, the last wicket falling for 245. Blackham increased his score to 63 when he was caught, Spofforth was caught for 6, and Evans not out for 4. The visitors then went to the wicket, and when stumps were drawn had made 272 for the loss of nine wickets. Melbourne, January 4. The cricket match Shaw and Lillywhite's team v. Australia was continued to-day. The Englishmen only increased their score by 4 runs, the last wicket falling for 276. Shrewsbury increased his gcore to 31 (bowled), Sherwin making 22 (not out). In their second innings the Australians scored 233 for the loss of nine wickets. The cricket match Shaw and Lillywhite's team v. the Australian Eleven was continued to-day. The Australians continuing their innings succeeded in compiling 249 runs when the last wicketfell. Evans was bowled after making 11, and Trott was not out for 29. M'llwraith scored on the previous day 35, when he was bowled. Sydney, January 7. The cricket match between Shaw and Lillywhite's team and the Australian Eleven was commenced to-day. The weather was fine. The ■ Englishmen winning the toss went first to the wickets, where they remained all day, and when the stumps were drawn had compiled 258 runs for the loss of aeven wickets. The Australians failed to make an effective stand against the English bowling, their first innings closing for 139. The small score made by the Australian Eleven in the match to-day is attributable to the wfoket being in a very rough oonditfon.
