TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Taitri County Council was held on Friday afternoon Present — Messrs Snow (in ihe chair), Charters, Gow, Thomson, Graham, and Grant.
COBREBPONDENCE.
A telegram had been received from the Under-secretary of Public Works , in reply to communications from the couucil r& the road to be taken through Jeffcoab's land, stating that a proclamation would appear in the next Gazette.
The Bruce County Clerk forwarded a resolution with reference to the appointment of a committee to examine the punt at Taieri mouth, asking the council to join the Bruce County in the examination. — Received. W. R. Duncan, hydraulic engineer, forwarded recommendations, and stated that any work in drainage, conservation, or control of rivers, &0., entrusted to him would be satisfactorily carried out. — Received.
A. J. Boyd wrote with reference to the state of the road" between Clarke's Junction and the Deep Stream, at a place known as Glengarry creek. — Letter received.
Findlay and Co. wrote offering totara piles for the Greytown bridge. — Received.
George Rutherford applied to be allowed to take four loads of clay from the cutting on East Taieri road. — Granted.
DEPUTATION. '
A deputation was received from Green Island with reference to the advisibility of employing prison labour on a lower gradient of the road at Look-out Point.
The council appeared in favour of co-operating in this endeavour, and after some discussion, the following resolution was passed : — " That the council is of opinion that the cutting through Look-out Point is a very necessary work, but that as their funds are quite insufficient to under* take the work, a letter be drawn up to the Government asking that the work be done by prison labour."
THK HOSPITALS AND CHARITABLE AID ACT.
Theregulations under the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Act were read.
The Chairman of the Bruce County Council wrote with reference to the advisibility of having the act amended so that each county might provide for its own poor, and contribute to the hospital in proportion to the cost of each patient. It was remarked that the contributions of the Bruce County had been steadily increasing since the passage of the act.
Some discussion took place, the majority of the members expressing themselves in accord with the views of the Bruce County Council. A resolution was eventually passed to the effect that the council would co-operate in trying to get the suggestion carried out.
EBPORTB.
The report of the Inspector of roads for Decemberwas read.
Cr Thomson moved " That tenders bewailed for the road from Brighton bridge. Tenders to be left in the hands of Crs Thomson, Graham, and the inspector." — Carried.
The report of the county engineer (Mr R. Hay) was also read and adopted : — It stated that tenders had been invited for contracts in the Henley drainage district. Thirtj -four had been received and the following accepted at a special meeting held on 22nd ult.— Contracts 138, 139, and 140, Findlay and Roberts, £177 11s 6d, £133 10s 2d, and £191 5s 4d respectively ; contracts 141 and 142, O'Rourke and 00., £134 2s Id, and £182 19s respectively. All these had been signed for and the men were now on the ground. Four other contracts had also been advertised for and tenders would be let shortly. Tenders had also been called for a new culvert or water opening on the Wingatui road near Baxter's.
The Inspector (Mr Davidson) reported on the various repairing works that had been carried out.
TENDERS.
The following tenders were accepted :— For Henley drainage contracts, B. M'lndoe (£96) and James King (£66 9s) ; for culvert at Wingatui, F. W. Lyders (£43 19s 9d) ; road formation from Henley to Berwick, R. Robinson (!o§d per yard) ; 100 yds gravel, R. Robinson (Is 4d per yard) . There were 24 tenders reoeivedf or these works in all.
For contracts 145 and 146 (scouring and grading drains in the Henley drainage district) no tenders were received.
NOTICE OP MOTION.
Cr Thomson gave notice of the following motion : — " That the offices of ranger, dog-tax collector, inspector of slaughterhouses, subcollector, and license committee collector be invited, and applications invited from persons willing to do the work, stating the remuneration required. Condition of duties to be drawn oat and lodged with the secretary."
