THE COST OF THE AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON.

A letter from the Commander-in-chief of the Australian squadron is published in the Gazette, giving 1 the cost of tlie Australian, squadron as follows:-— Bstimated'first cost to the British taxpayers of the vessels composing -the Australian squadron— viz., Nelson, Diamond, Opal, Miranda, Raven, ' Swinger,, Undine^ . Harrier— £B4o,l24 ; estimated. annual post of above-named vessels including cost'_ of 4 , relieving . crews, d£237,t>12.t. This" is exclusive of the cost of .the depot' at Sydney, and of the administrative .charges.' There are six surveying vessels in addition' to the' above employed on' the station. The entiro charges'dne to four of them are. borne • by" the Admiralty and the Queensland Government 'in; one case; and .between the Admiralty and Western Australia in the other.' Sincethe return was'inade, H.M.S. Miranda, Commander Kocke, has been repkeed^by H.M.S. 1 Rapid,' Captain Mofigrave, 1 a nwtfe costly vessel,' with" a irioSera ajtnainect-. ' '■' '
