The Adelaide Jubilee Chess Congress.
The Adelaide Chess Club purpose holding' an Anatraliaa I hess Congress in July or August, 1887. to be limited to players residlig In Australasia and New Zisaland. In that, year the'Wfch y?ar if tlie reign of Hw Majesty Queen Victoria, and also of the foundation of South Australia, will be'commemorated by the Adelaide Jubilee' Exhibition. The Adelaide Chess Club consider the occasion is peculiarly fitted -for carrying out a long cherished project for holding an Intercolonial Chess Congrf ss. The committee intend ho'ding two tournaments ••imultaneously— viz., ,a Master Tourney for the leading players of Australia and New Zealand, and a Minor Tournament designed for other players. Substantial prizes will ' be offered, dependent, of course, upoa the amount subscribed. TBeydeem the intercolonial character, f of the* Congress will justify a general canvas throughout the. neighhour- , ing colonies for subscriptions An Australian Chess Congress has been mooted before on -several occasions, but never resulted in a practical 'issue. The committee consider that circumstances concur In presaging the success of their scheme. They also feel that a helping hand should be extended by all admirers of the, game because the .opportunity of holding a Congress in connection with a great and popular gathering'like'tho Jubtke Exhibition is' not, likely to occur again for many years. , Continuous mtercol-nial communication by rail will then be rompleted between Adelaide, and Melbourne, Sydney.and Brisbane. Facility of transit and low fares will, greatly. assist tho movement,. The committee hope to, raise ,at least £200 for prizes less expenses. Competitors will be debarred from ' playing in more than one ' tourney. •' !As the' Congress is designed for colonial players, each compeli- , tor will have to be a resident in Australasia or JXew . Zealand for 6ix months prior to nomination. The entrance feo to the master tourney will be two ' guineas, and fa. the minor /tourney" one guinea./ Should a player withdraw, he must forfeit his entrance feo. The players will compete on even terms' and w;ll contest one game with every»oth'er' com' peMtor,,a draw counting as half a win.' :The"players will be paired by-lot before the commencement 'of 1 ' the tourney. A tie will have to be played offi'the winner to score two games. It is proposed In "the" master tourney that each payer shall finish one ' game a-day for five or six days per week, so asto permit «f the tournament being concluded in a'forV night if possible ' •
in conclusion the committee earnestly urge upon " all dhessplayers and patrons of, the game to subscribe, something towards the prize fund. Any contribution, however small, will be thankfully received. ' A subscriber raav remit amount directed by money order or otherwise. to, Mr Q.|J. Shuttleworth, treasurer of the Adelaide Chess Club," or,to the secretary of the chess club to which t' c) donor ' may belong. Subscribers would oblige by informing the committee the sum they will give at their' earliest convenience, because the'cqmmitteedesire to announce in March nfcxt the amount of prizes to bo awarded.- -■■
