LAND & WATER.

At the Nelson Regatta the Yacht Race was > won by Askew's Dream (Nelson),. Isca (Wellington) second. Won by smiri. The rowing races were won by the Wakatu Club, Nelson.

The Dunedin Highlanders won the rifle match with the Canterbury Scottish by 425 to*. 383 points. Lieutenant Anderson, of the Canterbury Scottish, made the top score of 63. The highest scorer for Dunedin was Corporal Marchbanks with 54.

W. J. Peall has made another best on record break at billiards. At the Royal Aquarium he commenced a match of 15,000 up against G. Collins, Peall conceding 5000 fpoints. On November 4 when play was stopped Peall left off with an unfinished break of 2002. On resuming the next afternoon he went on hammering away at the spot, assisted by a little all-round play, until he broke down at an ordinary winning hazard, having beaten his own Cambridge record of 1989 by no less thaft 524 points, the total break reaching 2413. Then the spectators (days the Pall Mall Gazette) yielding themselves up to excitement, yelled their congratulation's till they were hoarse, and Sir Robert Peel, unable to contain himself, sprang towards the smiling little player, and wrung his hand with rapture and good-fellowship. Mr Wright,-after a neat little speech, in which he seemed to place Mr PealFs marvellous performance among the greatest achievements of modern tiroes^, presented the player with a £50 note he had promised to the player who would first make 2000 off the balls. Peall then, after a break from Collins, continued scoring until he had amassed 780, at which point the limit was reached for the day. The extraordinary character of the performance may best be judged from the fact that for many years, up till comparatively recently, 1 Mr Cook's 960 was the rr cord. ' . •
