TAIERI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Committee of Management- Messrs J, Gow (president), J. Allan (vice-president), J. Shaw, D. ManBon. W. Jaffray, J. Shennan, R. Todd J. Findlay, A. Kobertson, W. Todd, P. Dey, R. Dickie, A. Kempshall, J. Oughton, J. Cullen, J. Sutherland, T. Craig, J. Robertson, P. Grant, J.Allan, n. Grant, A, M'Plierson, J. Sliand, S. Young, aud E. Findlay (secretary).

The twenty-fifth annual show of this society was held at Mosgiel on Tuesday. The weather, contrary to expectation, turned out beautifully fine, and there was consequently a very good attendance, about 1000 people being on the ground during the afternoon. This, however, does not come up to the attendance at some of the previous shows. Neither was the show of stock equal to what it has been in former years, for there was a decided falling off in many of the classes. The total number of entries was about 300. In some of the classes there was little competition, and in others none at all. In shorthorns the competition was confined to Mr James Shaud and Miss Alice Shand, some really good animals'being shown. In Ayrshires there were better rings, but Messrs A. and J. M'Farlane took most of the prizes. Thos. Howie was also a successful competitor in this class, and he succeeded in taking, among other prizes, the silver medal for the best bull in the yard with an animal out of Messrs M'Farlane's Killoch. Messrs M'Farlane took the champion prize for the best cow. Coming to the sheep, in the Leicester class John Grey took the most important prizes, 1 but Messrs s M'Pherson ran him very close in several classes, and, in addition to other prizes, carried off the medal for the best ewe. There were no entries in the Lincoln class, and in Romney Marsh and merinos Mr James Fulton and Messrs D. and A. M'Pherson were respectively the only exhibitors. Messrs Gow, Oughton, and Wyllie were the prizetakers in Downs. The principal feature of the show was as usual the draught horses. Such wellknown exhibitors as Messrs R. Gawn, W. M'Pherson, J. Walters, Smellie, and Young, James Allan, John Allan, John Fiudlay, Mrs Nimmo, and Mrs Millar were among the competitors, and the excellence of their stock need not be commented upon. James Gow took the •prize for the best entire with a Jfcwo-year-old, and R. Gawn secured the champion prize for the best mare. The show of light; horses was not all that might have been desired. Le Loup was the best thoroughbred entire, the only other horse shown in this class being H. C. Bennet's Sir Garnet. The dairy produce was up to the usual standard of excellence, and the entries in the various classes were numerous. Mrs W. Jaffray was remarkably successful in taking the three principal prizes for butter. The Inch Clutba Dairy Factory Company competed in two of the classes, and succeeded in taking a second prize for cheese, though they showed at a disadvantage, inasmuch as their exhibit was rather new. There was not much of a show in the way of implements. Among the extra exhibits, hpwever, may be mentioned Mr Reid's wire strainer, a most ingenious contrivance, which has now been patented in most countries in the world. Messrs Hordern, Brayshaw, and White had several nice looking buggies on the ground, which were awarded first prizes. The management in connection with the show was first-class, and the whole of the judging was finished soon after four o'clock — a desirable state of affairs seldom experienced at the ordiuary country show. The following acted as judges:— Messrs J Steele (Clinton) for shorthorn cattle; J Gemmell (Maheno), X B Ferguson (Blueskin), J Scott (Waikbkoi), Ayrshires; D M'Gregor (Oamaru), J Knox (Stirling), J Russell (Invercargill), draught horses; J Fleming and W t Philp (Dunedin), thoroughbreds;'Jßekl(ElJerslie)and JM Kerchen (Woodlands), for sheep; Mesdames Thornton (Milton), Be.attic and M'Kay (Peninsula), for dairy produce.
