EDUCATION BOARD.

The regular meeting of the Education Board was held at the board's offices, Colonial Batik buildings on the 18th. There were present — Messrs M. Fraer (chairman), J. M'Kwnzie (M.H.R.), J. Green, A. C. Begg, H. Clark, J. F M. Fraser, Rev. Dr Macgregor, and the Hon. T. Dick.

RESIGNATION.

The resignation of D. Macpherson, head master of the Manuka creek school, was accepted.

APPOINTMENTS.

■ The following appointments were made : — W. J. Strong, head master Bannockburn, vice Corbett, resigued ; • John Williamson, head master Saddle Hill, vice Stewart, resigned; Daniel Macpherson, head master Waiareka, vice Gow, resigned. BUILDING GRANTS. A circular letter was read trom the Wanganui Education Board asking for an expression of opinion on the part of the board regarding the action of the Government in intimating that none of the moneys granted for school buildings should be spent for painting old buildings. The board approved of the protest made regarding this matter by the Wanganui" Board, and the opinion was expressed that if the moneys voted by Parliament for school buiMings were not to be hpunt in keeping the buildings in repair, means should be provided for raising money locally or the Government bhould provide increabed grants.

TABLE HILL DISTRICT.

A memorial was received from the settlers of Table Hill asking for the establishment of a school. — The memorial was referred to the secretary to visit the district referred to aud report upon it.

ARTHUR STREET SCHOOL.

The board's architect submitted a plan of the proposed additions to Arthur strcetschool. — The plan was approved, and authority was given to proceed with the work.

EVANSDALF.

The committee appointee) to inquire into the complaints made by M,r Borrows, a member of the Evaosdale School Cknnmifrtoe, against the

teacher (Mr Fraser) brought up the following report, which Was approved :—

The following report by the Finance Com* mittee was adopted : — Your committee having considered the various matters ref< rred to them, hn^ to make the followii g reconuneu'lauons :— North Taieri. -That the old school building be handed over to the school committee,' on condition that the proceeds derived from its sale be devoted to the improvement of the school property, the building to be removed from its present site. Anderson's tiay. — That the old residence be handed over to the school committee on condition that the proceeds of its sale be expended in the improvement of the school property. North Otago Meads. — That in view of the largelyincreased population in this district the board supply increased school accommodation.

Eweburn. — That new school buildings be erected in thiß distriCu, the present ones baing totally unsuitable.

Waiareka. — Your committee cannot recommend the bo ird to grant the application from this district for improvement to the buildings. Oamaru South.— That the recommendations of the architect re the repairing of the teacher's residence be given effect to.

fe'eacliff .— That the teacher's residence in this distriot be enlarged. Waitahuna Weat. — That the board contribute onehalf of the rose ot the completion of ttie school building 6in this district, provided that the board's contribution shall not exceed £.J3.

Waikouatti. — That the application for shelter sheds be deul>ned.

THE SYLLABUS. Dr Macoreqoe mentioned the matter .of the syllabus papers, intimating that the report had been unavoidably delayed somewhat, but that it would be handed in shortly.

ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £6621 2s 4d were passed for payment.
