SALMON IN TIMARU WATERS.
A splendid specimen of the Californian salmon was caught at Timaru on the 17th by a young man who was out in a boat fishing for herring with a landing net. While netting herring in a shoal the fish jumped into the net and was landed in the boat. A second salmon got into the net a few minutes afterwards, but could not be secured. The fish was on view at the Harbour Board office to-day, and was inspected by a large number of people, and, all those who knew anything about salmon expressed the opinion that it belonged to that species. The fish weighed 6lb, and measured 26in. This is the first salmon caught in the sea at this port, but from what river it came is of course a mystery.
[Note. — I am very much afraid if the fish was submitted to experts it would turn out to be an ordinary brown trout that has taken to the sea to improve his complexion.— J. S.]
